How to design a book cover?

Photoshop is a graphics and image design and processing software launched by Adobe. Through PS we can carry out art design and production. Are you interested in the design of covers of books, newspapers, periodicals, etc.? Below I will take the 16K cover of "Sailing" as an example to introduce to you how to create a cover in PS. I hope that through my brief description, everyone can understand the general process of its production.

Below I will introduce the basic links and key points in the entire production process. As for the detailed design and beautification operations, I will not go into details here, such as special effects text, images, etc.

First, create a new image according to the cover requirements. "Sailing" is a 16K (185mm×260mm) cover, so before creating a new image, first calculate the size of the cover; the method is as follows: the cover generally includes the front cover, back cover, and spine; "Sailing" width = cover width + spine thickness + back cover Width = 185mm + 185mm + 2mm = 372mm; height = 260mm; this is the actual size of the cover, but in the actual design process we generally need to add 3mm to each of the four sides (also called "bleeding" size), so the total size of the cover so far is 378mm × 266mm .

When creating a new image, set it up as shown in Figure 1. The height is 26.6cm, the width is 37.8cm, the resolution is 300, and the mode is set to RGB color to facilitate editing; because many functions in PS must be in RGB Operate in color mode, such as some filter functions. We can complete it in RGB color mode and then convert it to CMYK mode (to meet the requirements of printing).

Secondly, after creating the image, go to View → Ruler to display the ruler in the image window, and then go to View → New Guide to mark the positions of the back cover, cover, spine and bleed, as shown in Figure 2.

Third, we add material images and special effects text at the corresponding positions on the front and back covers, such as: newspaper name, publishing unit, special effects pictures, etc. The spine of "Sail" is too thin, so there is no need to insert materials . This step is quite flexible. According to the designer's ideas and requirements, the PS functions used are different. You can process a special effects picture first and then insert the image; you can also insert the image first and then add the special effects; everything Just do what you want as the designer!

The fourth step is to convert the cover image into CMYK mode. Method: Select Image→Mode→√CMYK Color

to achieve conversion.

Fifth, save the image; output it in TIF or EPS format, because images in EPS and TIF format can be directly sent to the film when the film is released. Before saving the TIF, it is best to export an original file to prevent dissatisfaction and facilitate modification. This is a good habit when using PS!

Finally, after the cover production is completed, the image is copied to a computer connected to the imagesetter, and is produced in 4 colors through the layout software. Regarding this step of operation, students who have the opportunity can go to the publishing house to take a look!

In fact, formal cover production does not only use PS. Even the cover of our "Sail" was designed by students in the Internet Department and then sent to the publishing house for revision! This involves PageMaker - a professional typesetting processing software. Therefore, if you want to use PS to design a good cover, you need to use other software to achieve it! OK, I hope that through the introduction of this article, your work will be used on the cover of the new issue of "Sail"! Thanks! !

To edit pictures, you can use Photoshop software. You can use the layers to list pictures or photos on top of them and add text. Finally set the page for printing.

If it is for publishing and distribution, it is recommended to hire a professional designer to design it.
