I. Background
At that time, the Qing court in the north regarded the painting style of the "Four Kings" as orthodox, but there were a group of painters with individuality in the south of the Yangtze River, which was quite different from the painting style of the "Four Kings" in the northern court, and the "Four Monks" was the representative. They became monks and had a strong national consciousness. Among them, Shi Tao and Badashan people were descendants of the Ming nationality.
Second, the artistic features
The four monks expressed their life experience and anguish through painting, and pinned their feelings for the mountains and rivers of their old country. All four people are good at landscape painting, each with its own style: Shi Tao is fantastic and elegant; Badashan people are simple and concise; Kun Cancang Zuo Chunya; Hong Ren is simple and secluded.
Although their styles were different, they all tried their best to give full play to their creativity, broke through the barriers of imitating the past in the painting world at that time, revitalized the painting world, and had a great influence on the later "Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou" until modern painters such as Wu Changshuo and Qi Baishi.
