The Life of Characters in Chen Zhongfan's Works

Chen Yushu (1853- 1906), Chen Zhongfan's uncle, was educated by Wang Xianqian, a famous scholar in Qing Dynasty, and under his guidance, he completed ten volumes of Shi Mao Literature and Art. Chen Yushu is a famous dutiful son in Yancheng, and once served as the president of Shangzhi College.

Chen Zhongfan "studied under his uncle from 10 to 15 and was deeply influenced by it". Chen Yushu is honest and clean. He encouraged himself with "no money, no shame" and encouraged his disciples with "less sarcasm, strong argument and old teaching" Chen Zhongfan benefited a lot from it. /kloc-in the autumn of 0/904 (the 30th year of Guangxu in Qing dynasty), Chen Yushu was employed as a teacher of Sanjiang Normal School and wrote three volumes of My humble opinion on education. Perhaps it is because I am deeply influenced by my uncle and admire his character and knowledge.

Chen Zhongfan 1909 was admitted to Liangjiang Normal School from Huai 'an Middle School, although his uncle had been ill for four years. When Chen Zhongfan was in the Liangjiang River, he often went to the Jinling tablet near Yanggongjing to listen to Buddhism on weekends, so he became interested in philosophy. After graduating from Liangjiang Normal College, he went to Hujiang University to study English.

19 13 was admitted to the philosophy department of Peking University. 192 1 midsummer, Chen Zhongfan returned to Nanjing from Beijing and was invited by National Southeast University to be a professor and director of the Chinese Department. He said to the students of the Chinese Department of the Women's Normal University: "In the past three years, I have been busy compiling textbooks, rarely going home, and my wife at home has not been able to take care of it. Recently, Nanjing Southeast University sent me a letter of appointment. I think twice and hesitate. After thinking, why not remember your wife and send the children in the old way and entrust your best friend, Mr. Hu Xiaoshi? He is upright, knowledgeable, vigorous in calligraphy and good at poetry and songs. I recommended him to the headmaster and he has been approved. What do you think? " After teaching for three years, there is a deep affection between teachers and students, but my husband wants to reunite with his mother, which is reasonable and inconvenient, so he can only nod.

After a while, Chen Zhongfan came to the classroom with him and said, "Last time I introduced Mr. Hu's character and knowledge, and now I give him the responsibility of rank." I am very grateful. You should study hard and pass on his knowledge. " Hu Xiaoshi said: "Since ancient times, disciples need not be inferior to teachers, and teachers need not be superior to disciples. I am entrusted by my brother Zhong Fan to come to Beijing to learn from you, not to teach ... ".

Chen Zhongfan and Hu Xiaoshi are both graduates of Liangjiang Normal School. They have been friends for a long time. The first time they met was in the spring of 1920, at Mr. Mei 'an's house, and they hit it off immediately. In 1 1 year, on the recommendation of Chen Zhongfan, Hu Xiaoshi left Shanghai and went north to teach at Beijing Women's Normal University. After more than 60 years, Cheng Junying, Raul's female disciple and professor of East China Normal University, still clearly remembers the unforgettable scene of Chen Zhongfan and Hu Xiaoshi "missing their wives and sending their children" when they were studying at Beijing Normal University. From August of 192 1 to August of 1924, Chen Zhongfan was a professor and head of the Department of China Literature of National Southeast University.

In July, 1924, Northwest University and Shaanxi Provincial Department of Education jointly held a summer school, inviting famous domestic professors to give lectures. There are Professor Lu Xun from Peking University and 14 famous professors from Xia Yuan. Three professors were invited to give lectures at Southeast University: Chen Zhongfan (China Literature Department), Wu Mi (Western Literature Department) and Jingbo Liu (Wen Hai, Political Department).

Chen Zhongfan's topic is: (1) Chinese teaching method in middle schools; (2) The sequence of China literature development; (3) Methods of reading ancient books. The trip to the northwest, "there are nine round trips every forty days." After the lecture, Chen Zhongfan and others visited places of interest and opened their eyes. In his later article "A trip to Shaanxi", he said: "What you can see is the wonder of Taihua ending in the south, the vastness of Hangu Pass, the rigor of Tongguan Pass, and all the things you yearned for in the past are on board, and you will get a lifetime return." What makes Chen Zhongfan unforgettable is that he once worked with Mr. Lu Xun and other colleagues and had the opportunity to listen to Mr. Lu Xun's "making a mountain out of a molehill" and laugh at "the voice of flies."

Chen Zhongfan and the professor of political science took the train northbound on Jinpu Road, changed to Longhai Road in Xuzhou, and went to Zhengzhou for business after autumn and Kaifeng. It happened that Lu Xun, Xia Yuan and Wang Tongling went south from Beijing, so they went west together. The next morning flies buzzed, disturbing people's dreams. Mr. Lu Xun said: "The' bandits crow and flies crow' recited by Shi Mao Feng Qi has been tested today." In Luoyang, Xia Yuan, a former senior student of science in Peking University, paid a special visit to warlord Wu. Wu: "What classes do Peking University teach?" Xia A: "As an electronic research in new physics." Wu pointed to the gossip hanging on his wall and asked, "There are also secrets of the change of Yin and Yang. Can you explain it to me? " Xia replied, "This old physics is different from the new physics." Wu Qiang argued irrationally: "Old mystery, new truth." When Xia Yuan came back from his visit, he talked about it with all the professors. Everyone laughed. Lu Xun teased, "This is also the voice of flies." When someone asked what courses to teach, Liu replied: "study international issues, especially' great nationalism'." Lu Xun said, "Does it mean imperialism? It disturbs the world a hundred times more than flies. " It is recalled that during the May 4th Movement, Mr. Cai Yumin (Yuan Pei) delivered a speech in Tiananmen Square, stressing that "only floods can destroy wild animals". Then someone sighed and asked, "Should these trivial things be eliminated at the same time?" Mr. Lu Xun replied: "Although this is a mountain out of a molehill, the new China will have its own new environment in the future. Of course, all pests must be swept away." Mr. Lu Xun hated flies, and once denounced buzzing "insects" in essays such as Soldiers and Flies and Three Summer Insects. During his trip to the northwest, Chen Zhongfan was deeply impressed by Lu Xun's denunciation of petty profits. More than 50 years later, he recalled this past event in The Fragments of Lu Xun to Northwest University. Chen Zhongfan has been studying Hu Xiaoshi in his senior year, crisscrossing the country and studying * * * *. /kloc-in the autumn of 0/920, Chen Zhongfan and Hu Xiaoshi met to teach at North Women's Normal University. 192 1 In the summer of, he headed the Chinese Department of National Southeast University and recommended Hu Xiaoshi to come to South China. "I got the approval of the authorities, but I was blocked by taboos and failed to do so." 1In September, 924, the Chinese Department of Jinling University was reorganized, and Hu Xiaoshi became a professor and head of the department, having an affair with Chen Zhongfan who was already working part-time at Jinda University. In less than a semester, Chen Zhongfan hurried south to teach at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou. When they returned to Jinda in the spring of 1926, they had another chance to get together and enjoy those strange things. During the period of 1927, the two gentlemen disagreed on matters such as maintaining or changing the old system of Jinling University, which led to disagreement. Chen Zhongfan transferred to Jinan University to teach in the spring of 1928. "Since then, this voice has been isolated for more than 20 years."

1952, the department was adjusted. Chen Zhongfan, who taught at Jinda University, went to the Chinese Department of NTU, and together with Hu Xiaoshi and Wang Bijiang, he was called the "three seniors" of the Chinese Department. Chen Zhongfan and Hu Xiaoshi came together. "* * * Seek mutual help and improve teaching." 1962, Hu Xiaoshi died suddenly, and Chen Zhongfan was deeply hit. "As for sighing, you are at a loss." . He thought of the relationship between two people who have studied * * * for more than 50 years, the twists and turns of gathering and dispersion, the things he kept imagining, and so many feelings. He wrote two articles, Mourning for Hu Xiaoshi's Predecessors and Expressing Heartfelt Mourning with Couplets:

Three years of * * * study, ten years of * * * events, and Ji Zha is a congenial person. How many confidants are there?

Four volumes of manuscripts, five volumes of books, sighing and respecting the piano, where is the soul at the end of the cool breeze?

Chen Zhongfan and Hu Xiaoshi are classmates of Liangjiang Normal University, and have worked in Dongda University, Zhong Da University, Jinda University and Nantah for many years. Although estranged, we can finally be honest with each other. Chen Zhongfan used "Ji Zha" and "Amethyst" as metaphors. Their meaning is true, and their feelings can be felt, which makes the younger generation sigh. When the Gang of Four was crushed, Chen Zhongfan was nearly 90 years old, but he was as excited and happy as the people of the whole country. From 1978 to 1980, he still went to Beijing once a year, attended all the committee meetings of the China People's Political Consultative Conference and the National People's Congress meetings, and cared about and participated in the discussion of state affairs.

1980, when he attended a meeting in Beijing, he wrote an autobiography for the book Contemporary Social Scientists in China at the invitation of the Literature Series Editorial Department of Beijing Library. There are two paragraphs that express his heart: "I am determined to make every effort to contribute to the early realization of the' four modernizations' of the motherland in my lifetime"; "The school's party and government organizations take care of our old teachers. Compared with the bleak evening scenes of the old people in the old society, I am full of happiness from time to time. I earnestly hope that the vast number of social science educators in China will be stable, United and full of vitality. Under the leadership of the party, they will work with the people of the whole country to make outstanding contributions to the' four modernizations' construction of the motherland. " He presented his books, calligraphy and paintings, antiques and so on collected for many years to Nanjing University and Nanjing Museum where he taught, and presented three houses he built to national universities.

1On July 22nd, 982, Chen Zhongfan died of illness. His memorial service was presided over by Bao Houchang, Chairman of Jiangsu Provincial Political Consultative Conference, and Zhang De, Party Secretary of Nanjing University, delivered a eulogy. The eulogy said: "The death of Professor Chen Zhongfan is a great loss for the education and academic circles in China. Professor Chen Zhongfan pursued brightness and progress all his life. His hard-working spirit of serving education, hard work in the academic field, unshakable patriotism and revolutionary spirit of loving the party and socialism are always worth learning. "
