Poetics of Yu Shinan's Cicada

Yu Shinan's poem "Cicada" is as follows:

The first two sentences of the poem "Cicada" say: "Hang down and drink the dew, and smell the trees." Describes the eating habits of cicadas. Cicada's head has two tentacles, which are shaped like a drooping hat band. It sucks nectar with its tentacles and is as carefree as drinking water. At the same time, the cicada's chirping is very loud, coming from the sparse plane leaves, becoming more and more clear. These two poems describe the life habits and characteristics of cicadas and express the poet's love and appreciation of cicadas.

The last two sentences of "Cicada" are "high-profile, not being caught by the autumn wind." It further expresses the poet's praise and reverence for cicada. The meaning of these two poems is: cicada's voice can spread far, not with the help of autumn wind, but because cicada lives in a high position and its voice naturally travels far. Here, poets spread far and wide by praising cicada's voice, in fact, they are praising those who are noble in character, independent and self-reliant and do not rely on external help.

By describing the image and habits of cicadas, the whole poem expresses the poet's pursuit and reverence for noble conduct. In the poet's view, a person as pure and noble as cicada can naturally gain the respect and admiration of others without the help of external forces. This is also a portrayal of the poet himself. With noble conduct and outstanding literary achievements, he became the leader of the literary world in the early Tang Dynasty.
