What is the legend about Guo Shouzhen and the construction of the "Three Churches"?

The Taiqing Palace in Shenyang was called the Three Churches in the early years. Speaking of how the three churches were built, there is a legend.

According to legend, not long after Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty ascended the throne, there was a severe drought in the Shengjing area. The seedlings were about to wither and die, and the earth was so dry that it was smoking. When the common people saw that there was almost no water to eat, they had no choice but to burn incense and kowtow, praying to God for rain. But I prayed for rain for ten or twenty days in a row, but not even a single rain star fell.

At this time, General Wu Kuli of Shengjing who was guarding the gate was also anxious. He asked the master in the mansion to write a notice and post it outside the general's mansion and the eight city gates. The notice said: "Whoever can ask for heavy rain from the sky will be rewarded by the government with a thousand taels of silver." Not long after the notice was posted, a man wearing a Taoist crown, a bun, and a The old Taoist wearing a blue preacher's robe, leggings, and straw sandals revealed the list. The guard guarding the notice saw the old Tao unveiling the list, and asked him: "Taoist Master, can you ask for rain?" The old Tao said: "This is not a child's play. If you can't ask for rain, how can I dare to unveil the list!" He hurriedly said: "Then please ask the Taoist priest to come with me to see the Lord." It turned out that the Taoist priest was none other than Guo Shouzhen, who came from Babao Yunguang Cave in Tiesha Mountain, Benxi, with the courtesy name Zhixu and Jingyangzi. He studied under Li Changming and practiced for many years after becoming a disciple. He has superb magic skills and can control wind and rain. On this day, just after he finished meditating on the futon, he calculated on his fingers that General Shengjing was posting a sign to pray for rain, so he went down the mountain to Shengjing.

At that moment, the general asked: "Taoist priest, what magic are you going to use to pray for rain?" Guo Shouzhen said: "As long as the general builds an altar three feet to six feet high." The general added Question: "Where should the altar be set up?" "It will be set up on the northwest corner of the city and outside the moat, in front of the blisters." So, the general sent people to set up the altar overnight.

Early the next morning, the old Taoist put on his cassock, stepped onto the altar with a slight stamp of his feet, then sat cross-legged and meditated, and began to practice the Dharma.

People from all over the city and countryside come to see the fun, but their noses are old. Strange to say, the sun was still blazing just now, but after a while, black clouds rolled in the sky, thunder roared, and then heavy rain began to fall. The people were so happy that they kept kowtowing to the Taoist priest in front of the altar despite the heavy rain.

Waiting until the heavy rain stopped, the old man stopped using his spell. It's sunny again. Guo Shouzhen jumped lightly from the altar, landed on the wall, and went to see the general.

When the general saw the old Taoist coming to collect the silver reward, he said indifferently: "There has been a drought for so many days, and if you don't come to pray for rain, it will rain." When the old Taoist heard this, he said, Understood, he was neither anxious nor angry, and said slowly:

"The general underestimates the Taoist. I regard the silver reward as a piece of grass. If the general says that my magic is not effective, he can test it on the spot." "

At this moment, the general's old housekeeper came to report that the general's mother suddenly became seriously ill and was in critical condition. The general couldn't care about anything else, so he asked the old man to wait in the hall, and hurriedly asked a famous doctor to go to the back hall to treat the old lady. After seeing the old lady's illness, the famous doctor said to the general: "If you want to cure the old lady's illness, you have to find a bunch of green wheat ears to use as a medicine introduction." This made the general anxious. , I don’t know what to do.

The old housekeeper hurriedly came up with an idea and said: "General, why don't you let the old Taoist think of something." So, the general went from the back hall to the front hall.

The general came to the front hall and saw the old Taoist sitting cross-legged in front of the wall, holding a bunch of green wheat ears in his hand. The general knew that Lao Dao was not a mortal, so he hurriedly bowed to Lao Dao and apologized.

Seeing that the general had changed his mind, the old Taoist gave him the ears of wheat and asked him to quickly make medicine for the old lady. The general was overjoyed and quickly sent someone to bring the thousand taels of silver. In addition, he also added many gold and silver treasures, food, clothing, and other things. The old Taoist refused to accept it no matter what.

The general asked puzzledly: "Taoist Master, you don't want these things, so what do you want?" The old Taoist said: "General, please accompany me." He led the general to Shuipaozi, who was building the altar, came forward and said, "I would like to ask the general to build a temple here to give his family a place to live." The general smiled and said, "If you can fill up this area of ??bubbles, I will build a temple for you." "The old man also smiled and said: "General, we have an agreement." After saying that, he walked away.

The next day, I saw the old man sitting on a big futon, floating back and forth on the water of the big bubbles, but it never sank. Some passers-by looked at it and found it very strange, so they stayed around the blisters. The old Taoist said to the people: "If you want to see me, take a bag of dirt into the puddle. If you can hit me with a stone, I will also give you a tael of silver." Now the people felt more interesting and gathered here from all directions. The more we gather, the more we gather. I saw a huge crowd of people in front of the blisters, some carrying dirt and others throwing stones. Farmers from dozens of miles around heard about it and drove their horse-drawn carriages, hauling soil and stones, to join in the fun. But no matter who you are, you can't beat the old ways. But this bottomless pool of water was quickly filled up with thrown stones and soil.

After some time, General Wu allocated some silver to start building the temple. The Taoist temple was built that year and was called "Three Churches" at the time. It was later renamed "Taiqing Palace".
