Wudang Mountain is the holy land of Taoism in China, also known as Taihe Mountain, Xieluo Mountain, Shenshan Mountain and Shixian Mountain. It was called Taiyue, Xuan Yue and Da Yue in ancient times. Wudang Mountain is known as the "crown of five mountains", among which "four famous mountains are all arched and five immortals worship the Sect".
Wudang Mountain has seventy-two peaks, thirty-six rocks, twenty-four streams, eleven caves, three pools, nine springs, ten pools, nine wells, ten stones, nine platforms and other scenic spots, with Tianzhu Peak as the center and eighteen dangerous roads up and down, with "seventy-two peaks facing the top" and "Golden Temple overlapping shadows".
The overall layout of the ancient buildings in Wudang Mountain is centered on the Golden Hall of Tianzhu Peak, and radiates around with the official road and the ancient Shinto road as the axis. The ancient building complex of Wudang Mountain also embodies the Taoist thought of "advocating nature" and maintains the original natural features of Wudang Mountain. The craftsmen designed the layout according to the principle of Ming Taizu Judy, that is, "to be wide and narrow", "to set its rules" and "not to build the mountain itself". The building materials of Wudang Mountain are not purchased locally, but from Shaanxi and Sichuan.
During the construction, we should make full use of the majestic mountain peaks and steep secluded places of rock streams, so that each building unit can be built in an appropriate position on the peaks, mountains, rocks and streams, and its spacing and scale are properly arranged, so that the building can be organically integrated with the surrounding environment, and the artistic effect can be achieved.
By the Ming Dynasty, Wudang Mountain had been embraced by emperors as the "Imperial Palace" and enshrined as the "God of Protecting the Country". The status of Wudang Mountain has been sublimated to "the first fairy mountain in the world", ranking above the five mountains and becoming the center of Taoist activities in China, showing its heyday of more than 200 years.
