The meaning of Sui

The original meaning is a verb, which means to look up in anger, that is, to look up in anger. It is extended as an adjective to mean looking up or looking up with joy, pronounced huī.

When Sui is used as a noun, it refers to the name of water, so the road is in today's Henan; the name of the county is Sui County in today's Henan; the surname is pronounced suī.

The character "睢" has appeared as early as the Warring States Bronze Inscriptions in the orthographic form of the sound of "eye" and "鹹". After the official reform, regular script was written in Sui, mainly due to the change of writing style.

"粢" is a pictophonetic character. The left "eye" refers to the eyes, which means to see or see; the right "鹹" is the general name for short-tailed birds.

The combination of "eyes" and "鹹" means "sui", which means looking up at the birds flying in the sky. Therefore, the original meaning of "sui" is to look up, and it is extended as an adjective to look up and look happy. Its meaning is pronounced as huī.

Words composed of the word "睢" include Sui Xu, Zi Sui, etc., but they are rare in ancient poetry.

The word "Sui" is often used as a noun to indicate place names. For example, the ancient canal opened during the Warring States Period had a tributary called Suishui. The old road ran from the present-day eastern Henan through northern Anhui to northern Jiangsu. After the Jin and Yuan Dynasties, It gradually became silted up, and today Sui County in eastern Henan is also named after Suishui.

In the early years of the Tang Dynasty, Suiyang County was established. The county seat was located in the south of Shangqiu County in present-day Henan Province. It was a local transportation hub. During the Anshi Rebellion, it was besieged by rebels. Local official Zhang Xun led his troops to defend the county for ten months. Supervising the battle, he would curse loudly, and finally broke his teeth.

Wen Tianxiang, the national hero of the Southern Song Dynasty, listed the righteous people of all ages in "Song of Righteousness", and said "for Zhang Suiyang's teeth", which is what he said. The character "Sui" is also a surname, such as the Song Dynasty painter Sui Shixiong, the Yuan Dynasty Sanqu writer Sui Jingchen, etc.

In addition, "Sui" also has the sound "wěi" in ancient Chinese, which is used as "Tian Sui", the name of a star. "Historical Records·Tianguan Shu": "(The Suixing) comes out in the morning with Yi Zhen in the ninth month, and is called Tiansui." This pronunciation and usage are no longer used in modern Chinese.
