Zhang Zhishu was born into a scholarly family, and his great-grandfather Na Tong was good at calligraphy. The words "Tsinghua Garden" at Tsinghua University in Beijing were inscribed by Na Tong. Zhang Zhishu's mother once studied painting with the famous calligrapher and painter Xia Wuqiao, and often received guidance from painters Wu Jingting and Wang Xuetao. Due to the influence of the environment and the subtle influence, Zhang Zhishu loved calligraphy and painting since childhood. In the early 1960s, he joined the Capital Air Force as a soldier. From an ordinary soldier to a well-known painter today, he has walked a path of hard exploration in art. He never dared to slack off in his painting creation, worked hard and forgot to eat and enjoyed himself to forget worries. For more than ten years, he not only inherited the excellent traditions of our nation, but also learned from the strengths of hundreds of schools of thought to make up for his own shortcomings. With tireless artistic exploration, accumulation and innovation, he has found his own path without losing the quality of traditional techniques, the style of pen and ink, and the appreciation of elegance and vulgarity, thus becoming an exclusive style. Over time, with his unique way of thinking and strong perseverance, he opened the door to art.
