What qualities should a painter have?

First, the calligrapher's character cultivation.

"People are the most important thing in books" is the consistent concept and comment criterion of ancient calligraphers. Judging from the history of calligraphy, calligraphers with high character and good virtue are naturally loved by people. Calligraphy aesthetics and evaluation are often based on the calligrapher's character. Su Shi said in Six Books of the Later Tang Dynasty: "The ancients discussed books and life. Although the work was not expensive, it was inhuman." Huang Tingjian advocates the relationship between calligraphy and morality and saints. He believes: "To learn books, you must have morality in your mind and learn from sages extensively. Books are valuable. " Liu Xizai, a calligrapher in the Qing Dynasty, famously said, "Calligraphers are like scholars; If he studies, if he is talented, if he is ambitious, in short, he is like a person. " The reason why Wang Xizhi's calligraphy works remain immortal is always regarded as a model for future generations to learn. The key reason is that "the right army has a high personality, so the book is fascinating" (Li Ruiqing's Collection of Qing Legacy). Cai Jing, a calligrapher in the Song Dynasty, had great influence on his calligraphy at that time, but few people could know and see it. The reason is that "his vicious and treacherous deeds are seen in people's eyes", so his calligraphy works have not been handed down.

The calligrapher's character determines the level of calligraphy. Facts tell us that we must cultivate our noble personality if we want to make high-style calligraphy works. Mr. Huang believes: "The quality of character can best affect the painting and calligraphy skills. When it comes to calligraphy and painting, you can't help but talk about character; With the way of being a man, you can talk about the way of painting and calligraphy and go straight to a good situation. " Some people have studied books all their lives, but they have achieved nothing. The main reason is nothing more than "character" and "understanding", that is to say, their character is not high, they can't practice, and their understanding is insufficient. In my opinion, a real calligrapher should mark his integrity through the real art of calligraphy, and can guide people to be good and beautiful with excellent works. In today's complicated market economy society, the way for calligraphers to improve their personality cultivation lies in "quietness" and "righteousness". To do anything, you need to calm down first, learn Chinese characters and write books. You can calm down so as not to be impetuous, speculate with your heart and run with your strength. Righteousness is the correctness of personality and behavior. Being a man needs to cultivate one's mind, and calligraphy needs to cultivate one's mind more. The so-called "heart is right" is the truth.

Second, the calligrapher's knowledge and accomplishment.

Mr. Huang Qiuyuan, a famous painter, said, "A painter should have temperament, emphasize individuality, not follow the fashion, but also have profound knowledge." With the support of study, we will have a unique personality and temperament. The formation of calligraphy condensed the essence of China traditional culture. Without in-depth study and understanding of China's traditional culture, it is impossible to be a real calligrapher, but at best, a writer. Of course, various phenomena in today's society have also increased obstacles for calligraphers to improve their knowledge and literacy. However, we should set a benchmark for ourselves, test our own shortcomings and gaps from the aspect of knowledge cultivation, always maintain the academic spirit of modesty and dedication, make use of all available time and opportunities, get in touch with China's traditional culture, and often dabble in literature, philosophy, aesthetics, history and other contents, so as to effectively improve our artistic appreciation and innovation ability. Only in this way can we continuously improve our self-cultivation, enrich and deepen the creative connotation, and effectively improve the artistic taste of our works. Mr. Qi Gong and Mr. Jiang Weisong are examples of combining their knowledge and cultivation with the creation and research of calligraphy art perfectly. Both of them are honored as famous calligraphers, but calligraphers are not their main titles, and calligraphy is not their major. Therefore, when people respectfully call them "famous calligraphers", the two old people have made it clear in different ways that their main business is teachers and their major is philology, classical literature or Chinese language and literature. However, no one will deny the fact that their main and sideline activities-academics and art complement each other and reflect each other. We must admit that they and the knowledge they represent are supporting from one side and one angle. Without them and their related knowledge, calligraphy and calligraphy will lose their souls and become eclipsed.

Third, the calligrapher's calligraphy accomplishment.

It seems contradictory to put forward this accomplishment. How can a calligrapher not have calligraphy literacy? Actually, it is not. Calligraphy is not a small skill, nor can it be achieved overnight. From the basic understanding of calligraphy, a real calligrapher should be diligent in learning and practicing techniques, have elegant appreciation ability and keen eye for judging advantages and disadvantages, be well informed, be familiar with the evolution of calligraphy history, and understand and master calligraphy in past dynasties. Calligraphers' calligraphy literacy can be divided into two aspects: first, basic skills and spirituality, that is, "being able to write" and "writing well". First of all, calligraphers need to pay attention to reading posts and copying, and pursue "similarity". The second is to be savvy and spiritual. The former belongs to the technical level, while the latter belongs to the artistic level. Technology is indispensable, but not all. Want to reach a state, only by understanding and spirituality. Technology and art are dialectical unity and indispensable. While learning the art of calligraphy, we should also systematically study rubbings, seal cutting and ancient Chinese characters. Second, we should learn calligraphy theory and aesthetic knowledge and improve our own aesthetic ability. Calligraphy creation is inseparable from calligraphy theory, aesthetics and calligraphy aesthetics. To improve this cultivation, we should learn the history of China's calligraphy and the selected calligraphy papers of past dynasties. To learn books step by step, you must devote yourself wholeheartedly. Some people even spend a lifetime of energy, but they may not reach a state, which is the same as the attributes of literary creation and scientific research. To become calligraphers in the true sense, they must also be able to withstand the eternal emptiness, boredom and experience of body and mind.

To sum up, as a real calligrapher, we should always maintain a sense of normality and responsibility, constantly improve ourselves from three aspects: character cultivation, knowledge cultivation and calligraphy cultivation, maintain a positive creative concept and vigorous creative energy, and produce more excellent works.

History is advancing and it is the fairest. After all, we are just a wave in the long history of calligraphy. If we can pave the way for inheriting the Chinese calligraphy art and do some work within our power, we can say that we have lived a clean life.
