Expansion: the spread of Chinese characters
After the establishment of the Western Zhou Dynasty, the enfeoffment system of "feudal kinship, following the example" became an important political system. The geographical space of Zhou people's enfeoffment has been quite vast: from Yan State in Liu Lihe in the north, to Zeng State in Yejiashan in Suizhou in the south, and to Qi State in Shandong in the east, many bronzes of the early Zhou Dynasty have been unearthed. Compared with Shang Dynasty, the number and location of unearthed inscriptions have greatly increased.
It is worth noting that in the early years of the Western Zhou Dynasty, most of the bronzes in the vassal States were the same as those in Zhou Dynasty, but there was no obvious difference in shape, decoration and technology, especially in inscription calligraphy, which could even be regarded as written by one person. It can be seen that with the great seal, Zhou people, their system and culture realized cross-regional flow, and Chinese characters spread in all directions from the Central Plains, realizing large-scale spread on the land of China.
Since the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, "governors are in power, not kings". Since the mid-Spring and Autumn Period, the characters in eastern countries have begun to change, and their physical structure and writing style have gradually drifted away from those in the Western Zhou Dynasty. By the Warring States period, the characters of different countries had been greatly divided, forming a situation of "different sounds and different characters".
On the one hand, due to the long-term political disunity, figures from various countries have gradually developed their own regional colors; On the other hand, with the development of the society and the expansion of the writing class, the newly generated vulgar characters and new words are often only popular in various regions and departments. By the mid-Warring States period, Chinese characters had basically formed the features of Qi, Yan, Jin, Chu and Qin.
The unification of Qin dynasty ended the disputes between countries since the Spring and Autumn Period, and also ended the tradition of enfeoffment system and the system of seeking secular wealth. The policy of "writing in the same language" is to "stop those who don't combine with the Qin language" and bid farewell to the "deformed writing" in the Warring States period. Qin's writing policy includes not only the unification of writing forms, but also the standardization of Chinese character habits.
The Qin Dynasty unearthed in Liye, Hunan Province was renamed Fang Mu, which was probably copied from the imperial edict. From this, we can see the specific measures of "writing the same text" in the Qin Dynasty: paying equal attention to orthography and orthography. The formation of a unified country is the guarantee of implementing the policy of "one language and writing" throughout the country; Correspondingly, the unified writing has also promoted the integration of society and thought, effectively guaranteed the orderly development of the bureaucratic system and became a symbol of national authority.
