Basic meaning:

Qi, a commonly used Chinese character (05 18), is pronounced as qí, Jiī, zī or zhāi, which was first seen in Oracle Bone Inscriptions in Shang Dynasty. It originally meant neat ears of wheat, but later it was extended to regulation and classification.
