Qi Baishi's disciples didn't make money by imitating their masters. Qi Baishi: He has surpassed me.

Li Kuchan is a proud disciple of Qi Baishi, and also a person who comprehensively inherits and develops Qi Baishi's painting style, which has a far-reaching influence on the painting world. In his early years, Li Kuchan lived a poor life. Although he was worshipped by Qi Baishi, he was helpless in life. Even so, he would rather pull a rickshaw to make a living than copy Qi Baishi's paintings to sell, which shows his noble character.

Li Kuchan: (1899- 1983), male, born in poverty. Modern painter and art educator. Original name, later renamed ying, word. Gaotang people in Shandong. 1923 Worship Qi Baishi as a teacher. He used to be a professor of Hangzhou Art College, a professor of Central Academy of Fine Arts, a director of China Artists Association and an academician of China Painting Academy. He is good at painting flowers, birds and eagles, and often makes huge screens in his later years. His representative works include: Hesheng, Eagle Map, Song Yingtu, Zhu Lan, Sunny Snow Map and Waterbirds Map. 1978 published Li Kuchan's paintings.

At that time, after studying painting under the guidance of Qi Baishi, Li Kuchan was naturally very happy, but he was depressed just because there was no economic source for studying painting. Until one day, he met an old friend who pulled a rickshaw. After some conversation, Li Kuchan felt that pulling a rickshaw was very hard, but it was enough to support his life, so he began to pull a rickshaw.

At that time, Li Kuchan could imitate Qi Baishi's paintings, but he didn't. He would rather pull rickshaws for a living than copy Master's paintings for sale, which also reflects Li Kuchan's upright and noble character.

Li Kuchan knew that pulling rickshaws would bring shame to the teacher, so after learning painting, he tried to pull rickshaws as far away from the old man's residence as possible. But one day Qi Baishi went out and happened to meet Li Kuchan. Li Kuchan turned to go, but Qi Baishi stopped him and asked Li Kuchan to pull him home.

Li Kuchan said shyly that I was humiliated by my teacher. Qi Baishi told Li Kuchan that he was a carpenter and was not ashamed. There is nothing shameful about eating by strength. After returning home, Qi Baishi said that he should mainly study painting at present, told Li Kuchan to stop pulling rickshaws, and packed up a house for Li Kuchan to live in. From then on, he began to support Li Kuchan.

Li Kuchan has no worries and is very grateful to Qi Baishi, so he paints very hard. Li Kuchan studied painting with Qi Baishi for many years. Qi Baishi once said that learning Zen is not like me, everyone learns from me, and English takes my heart. Between the lines of Qi Baishi, we can feel his appreciation for this apprentice.

Although Li Kuchan's paintings are not like Qi Baishi in form, they are in the same strain in verve. Qi Baishi's artistic style is integrated into the artistic conception of Li Kuchan's painting, whether it is aesthetic artistic conception or painting style.

Qi Baishi praised Li Kuchan not only because of Li Kuchan's exquisite painting skills, but also because of his noble character. From beginning to end, he never imitated the paintings of the old man Baishi and sold them to others. Qi Baishi was very famous in painting at that time. Li Kuchan can sell them as long as he imitates them a little. He would rather have no buyer for his paintings than imitate Qi Baishi.

This is what the painting world often says. Li Kuchan is a model.

Li Kuchan did not copy the teacher's artistic form, but continued Qi Baishi's artistic accomplishment and charm. In composition, Qi Baishi pays attention to the characteristics and correlation of the image itself. Li Kuchan emphasized artistic spirit rather than image in his creation. He believes that composition should not be copied according to the image itself, but should break the stable composition way.

In the use of ink color, Qi Baishi showed a flexible spirit, while Li Kuchan showed a sharp feeling.

In terms of painting style, Qi Baishi's paintings are mainly Gu Zhuo's childlike interest, while Li Kuchan's paintings are mostly presented with masculinity, which is different from Qi Baishi's painting language.

Li Kuchan can inherit and break through on the basis of Qi Baishi, which is worth learning by many people. There are also many painters who only imitate their predecessors in the process of learning painting and calligraphy, but lose their own style and artistic language, and it is difficult to achieve great things after all.

Regarding Li Kuchan's artistic achievements, Qi Baishi once said in Li Kuchan's "The Picture of the Qing Palace" that Li Kuchan also surpassed me, which shows his affirmation and appreciation of Li Kuchan.

When we talk about Li Kuchan's paintings again, we tend to ignore Qi Baishi's influence on him. He and Qi Baishi come down in one continuous line and have their own styles. Qi Baishi once said that learning from me is the best interpretation of Li Kuchan.
