After reading Su Dongpo's Biography, it took Lin Yutang about six nights to finish reading Su Dongpo's Biography. In these six days, I always thought about Su Dongpo falling asleep and waking up thinking about Su Dongpo, which was particularly fulfilling and wonderful.
Su Dongpo was born in Jing Shou, Song Renzong for three years. He experienced Renzong, Zhezong and Hui Zong, and witnessed the process of chanting from prosperity to decline. Understanding Su Dongpo's life is also helpful for me to understand the history of the demise of the Song Dynasty.
Su Like Dongpo, how many praises are used to describe him is in vain. He is versatile and has a wide range of hobbies. He is competent in any field, and he is kind and open-minded. How can such a person not be admired? As Lin Yutang wrote, Su Dongpo is an optimist whose nature cannot be changed, a moralist who is considerate of others, a good friend who benefits the people, an essayist, a new painter, a great calligrapher, an experimenter in brewing, an engineer, an opponent of pseudo-Taoism and an expert in brewing. He is the emperor's secretary, an alcoholic, a kind judge, a political opinion, a moonwalker, a poet and a humorous person.

When Su Dongpo was a bachelor of Hanlin, he planned to write 800 letters, all of which were sonorous, skillful and concise. Often quoted from classics, full of examples and metaphors. After Su Dongpo's death, another man took over his position and had high expectations for his literary talent. He asked how the old servant who served Su Dongpo in those years was better than Su Dongpo. The old servant replied, "Su Dongpo's writing is not necessarily better than that of adults, but he never uses books."
Lin Yutang is humorous, and the humanitarian spirit at the end is really unbearable. The author's praise and criticism of others is so intriguing, as far as Shi himself is concerned. If only everyone spoke with such humor. I read Biography of Lin Yutang a few years ago. Lin Yutang not only loves writing, but also loves researching and inventing China's typewriter, which is very similar to Su Shi. But as Lin Yutang himself said, it is necessary to make a final judgment on a person. Su Shi didn't let people have any criticism until the last moment of his life. Lin Yutang was so corrupt at Nanyang University that his last days were not guaranteed. The author seems to have forgotten to learn from Su Dongpo.
When I was a student, I also learned some Su Shi's poems and heard anecdotes from teachers, but I didn't feel deeply or even count them. After reading the biography this time, I deeply realized the ups and downs of Su Shi's life. The creative background of each poem is different, so we can't just understand the meaning of the poem itself.
I thought the teacher was talking happily about how great Su Shi was in class, and the students were probably indifferent. If you are shocked and touched, you must experience it yourself, read his biography and recite his poems. Hearsay says that one ear listens and the other ear listens. Learning can only be active.
Taking history as a mirror and putting people first, I am glad that I spent six nights with a writer of the Song Dynasty. I want to spend more time getting to know him. This book is borrowed, which is why I stayed up reading.
Lin Yutang's thoughts on reading four volumes of Su Dongpo's biography have not been finished yet, and he is slowly turning them over. Lin Yutang's book was originally written in English, and Zhang Zhenyu's translation is not bad, but rough places can also be seen everywhere, such as the first chapter of the first volume:
One day, Su Dongpo wrote to a friend and said, "The greatest pleasure in my life is that when I write a text, I can express my complicated feelings with my pen. I call myself the joy of life, that's all. " This passage is very strange, and then I searched an article by a world master on the Internet, only to know that the original text should be: "There is nothing pleasant in a certain life, but when I write an article, I am full of twists and turns, claiming that there is no such thing as happiness in the world."
There is another BUG that even Tianya experts have not mentioned. The second volume, the seventh chapter of the ambush pen "Zhongyue Songshan Collapse", echoed by the ninth chapter, has become "Nanyue Huashan Landslide". What's wrong with these two places, translation error, manuscript error or proofreading error? I'm afraid we need to find the original English version. But Huashan Mountain in Nanyue is a mistake in itself. It seems that Huashan has never been called "Nanyue".
Let's put aside these minor flaws.
Su Dongpo's reputation spread for nearly a thousand years, praised by people at that time and admired by future generations. On the one hand, due to his talent, he has done well in various fields such as poetry, writing, calligraphy and painting. On the other hand, his personality charm, political stance and philosophical accomplishment also fit the ideal of China people. Biography for such a perfect person is obviously not very likable. Coupled with rich historical materials and one-sided comments, it is reasonable that this biography is "non-original". Lin Yutang said in the preface: "I think I know Su Dongpo completely because I know him, and I know him because I love him." Since Su Shi has pinned his outlook on life, his preference is even more undisguised.
The second volume describes Su Dongpo's prime experience, and his entanglement with Wang Anshi takes up a long space. In the two sections of "Wang Anshi's political reform" and "the struggle with" xianggong ",Wang Anshi is the protagonist, while Su Dongpo has become a supporting role. These two parts do not seem to be in the book. Lin Yutang belittled Wang Anshi. I think the purpose is not to raise Su Shi, but to express his views on history. Including praise from Sima Guang. In fact, history doesn't matter the truth, and politics is hard to distinguish between clear and turbid. Just like a mirror, everyone looks different. This part can be compared with Bai Yang's book, which is two completely different opinions. Unlike Su Shi, Wang Anshi has always been controversial, which is the case in history and today.
Lin Yutang himself is a controversial figure, but his talent is still recognized. This biography of Su Dongpo also has refreshing quips from time to time. For example, there is a sentence in Chapter 16 of Book 3:
If philosophy has any use, it can make people laugh at themselves.
There are many such things, but without context, they lose a lot of flavor.
