Da Zhongguang in the Qing Dynasty said, "Qi stretches on the left and right, and the pulse is constantly weak ..." The book The Complete Works of Chinese Characters in Brush Style says that Qi is the momentum between the upper and lower characters, which is uninterrupted, not only for one line, but also for the two lines before and after. This is called qi. The last stroke of the upper body character and the first stroke of the lower body character should have echo and expectation, and the official script is dark and the cursive script is clear. The dots and strokes of the upper and lower characters (up and down) echo and connect properly, forming the movement of the work, that is, the vein is smooth and the blood is full. Taking the word "Zhong Miaohuai" in Huai Su's Autobiography as an example, the correspondence between words and between words is more obvious, especially in Preface to Lanting.
Obviously, in a calligraphy work, lines and characters do not exist independently, and they are closely related. They are composed of individuals with a word. Kang Youwei once said: A book is a human being, with essential bones and muscles, thick blood and old bones, and bright flesh. Besides, it's beautiful! It can be seen that calligraphy, like people, is also a living organism, and between the lines, it should show abundant bones and muscles. It shows the smoothness of the charm and gives the viewer a reverie and a sound. This is the beauty of calligraphy.
Gas is now associated with words. The connection between words depends on the hairspring, and the connection between words depends on the meaning of the pen, that is, the pen breaks the meaning. The hairspring is a thick and thin stroke path formed by the last stroke of the upper word and the beginning stroke of the lower word according to the degree of lifting. Pen means the trend of collecting pens, although it is broken and connected again. The same is true for the connection between the upper line and the lower line. One is that the last word is connected with the first word, and the other is to take care of the trend. If the trend of the previous line converges, the next line will be indulgent, or different in weight, orderly in depth, caring for each other and harmonious from beginning to end.
The perfection of qi depends on skill, technique and sex. Mr. Qi Gong said: Familiarity means memory, and every stroke is accurate, such as familiarity. Practice makes perfect. One word, one line, one article, can be accomplished in one go. They are by no means independent and unrelated.
Qi is a spirit, a healthy spirit and an ideological realm cultivated by calligraphers for a long time. When writing, I am highly concentrated and don't know if I exist. Liang said in Qing Dynasty: Writing should be full of qi, which comes from familiarity, strong qi and qi between the lines.
