Wang Yi's Helpless Politician
After the outbreak of the Revolution of 1911, due to social unrest, Tianjin, Qingdao and other foreign concessions became a good place for the old people of Xun Qing Dynasty to escape the war and support their lives. The last emperor Puyi later went to Tianjin, and Wang Yi also came to Qingdao early. In addition to Wang Yi, military affairs ministers, Puyi, Prince Gong, Liu, president of the University Hall (predecessor of Peking University), and Kang Youwei, who failed in political reform, also settled in Qingdao successively. Different from people living in the late Qing Dynasty, Wang Yuan never asked about political affairs after he settled in Qingdao, and even resisted pressure and refused Yuan Shikai's invitation. As a far-sighted political figure, Wang Yuan's heart is ambivalent. He regrets the demise of the Qing Dynasty and vaguely foresees the inevitable arrival of an unprecedented new era. Therefore, he is addicted to landscapes and calligraphy all day. This reflects the wisdom and helplessness of a reformer.
