Introduction to Yang Yuebin

Yang Yuebin (1822-1890), whose original name was Zaifu and whose courtesy name was Hou'an, was from Shanhua (now Changsha), Hunan. He was originally from Qianzhou (now Jishou) and was the naval commander of the Hunan Army in the late Qing Dynasty. 1 Yang Yuebin was born in the military and participated in suppressing the uprising initiated by Li Yuan in Xinning. In the third year of Xianfeng (1853), he established the Hunan Navy with Zeng Guofan and served as the officer of the Youying Battalion. After that, he fought with the Taiping Army many times and made many military exploits. He was promoted to the admiral of the Fujian Navy and was given the title Biaoyong Batulu. During the Tongzhi period, he worked with Zeng Guofan and Zeng Guoquan to encircle Nanjing, encircle and suppress both sides of the Yangtze River, suppress the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, and was awarded the title of Governor of Shaanxi and Gansu and the first-class light chariot captain. In the first year of Guangxu (1875), Yang Yuebin was ordered to work with Peng Yulin to rectify the Yangtze River Navy. In 1885 (the eleventh year of Guangxu), he led the army to aid Taiwan and cooperated with Liu Mingchuan to defeat the French army. In the 16th year of Guangxu's reign (1890), Yang Yuebin died of illness and was given the title of Taibao to the crown prince, with the posthumous title of Yongxi. Yang Yuebin was good at poetry and prose, and was especially good at calligraphy. There is "Yang Yongcu Gong's Collection" handed down to the world.
