There are two main sources of Duanmu's compound surname. One is from the surname Ji. During the Spring and Autumn Period, Duanmu Ci was a student of Confucius, and later generations took Duanmu Ci as their surname. Second, it originated from the Hui nationality and belongs to the Han surname. Duanmu is one of the compound surnames of Hui people. Duanmu was originally an ancient surname in China, and later it was integrated into the Hui nationality. Duanmu, early seen in Hui nationality, was a calligrapher and painter Duanmu Zhuo and Duanmu Zhi in Qing Dynasty. Duanmu Hui people are mainly distributed in Anhui and southeast coastal areas.

Duanmu Xiaowen and Duanmu Xiaosi: Famous Ministers in Ming Dynasty. Lishui Mountain people (now Wu Shan Township, Lishui, Jiangsu). His father, Duanmu Yishan, was the minister of punishments during the Wuxing period of the Ming Dynasty.
