Du Shenyan’s father, Du Yiyi, was the county magistrate of Gong County (now Gongyi, Henan), and his family followed him. He settled in Gong County. Du Shenyan was a Jinshi during the Xianheng period of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty. Du Shenyan was one of the founders of "modern poetry" in the Tang Dynasty, and he made great contributions to the final formation of rhythmic poetry. Hu Yinglin, a famous scholar in the Ming Dynasty, once commented on Du Shenyan: "In the early Tang Dynasty, there was no seven-character formula, and the five-character formula was not transcendent. The beauty of the two characters was actually pioneered by Du Shenyan."
