Gossip about couplets in the study: The wax clogs are full of feelings and the lower teeth are high, and the wheel is really thinking about ancient and modern books.

Mr. Liang Tongshu (1723-1815), a scholar and calligrapher of the Qing Dynasty, once had such an ink mark:

The wax clogs are high and the lower teeth are high, and the zhuó wheel really reminds me of ancient and modern books.

These two sentences come from the Qilu "Spring Day" written by Song Xiáng (996-1066), the number one scholar in the Northern Song Dynasty. The original poem is as follows:

When I first obeyed, I still lived in Luochuan, Ming Remove the frog cymbals before they are full.

I am worried about seeing sparrows in the dew garden, and my hook is useless for baiting fish.

The wax clogs have high teeth, and the wheel really reminds me of ancient and modern books.

Han people still laugh at themselves frequently, but they still have to concentrate on guarding Boru.

Let’s take a look at “The Wax Clogs and the High Lower Teeth” first.

The "wax clogs" here can be regarded as a code of traditional Chinese culture, which means "a carefree and leisurely life". Excerpted from Shishuo Xinyu·Ya Liang:

The ancestors were few and fond of wealth, but Ruan Yao collected good clogs and managed them all by himself. They were both tired, but did not judge their gains and losses. People have ancestors, and they value wealth when they see it. When the guests arrived, the screen was not completely clear. There were two small bamboo chopsticks behind them, leaning forward to block them, but the intention could not be calmed down. There may be a man named Ruan who, seeing himself blowing fire wax clogs, sighed and said: "I don't know how many chopsticks (a quantifier, equivalent to the "double" we say today) of clogs in a lifetime?" His expression was leisurely. Then the victory and defeat began to be divided.

The "high and low teeth" here refer to the "Biography of Xie Lingyun" in Volume 67 of "Book of Song":

Lingyun had a rich career due to his father's capital. There are many slave boys, and there are hundreds of righteous disciples. They have done endless service by digging mountains and dredging lakes. If you look for mountains and ridges, you will definitely find deep and steep mountains with thousands of rock peaks. Always wear wooden clogs when climbing on tiptoes. When going up the mountain, remove the front teeth, and when going down the mountain, remove the back teeth.

Look here at the "clogs" worn by Xie Lingyun when going up and down the mountain. When going up the mountain, remove the "front teeth", and the back of the clogs will be higher and the front will be lower; , go down the mountain, each has his own convenience. Later generations called this kind of wooden clogs "Xie Gong clogs".

Therefore, "The wax clogs are full of feelings and the lower teeth are high", which means roughly - Ruan Yaoji likes to take care of his clogs, Xie Lingyun likes to travel around, and I also like this kind of leisurely leisure.

Let’s read “Zhen Lun Really Wants Ancient and Modern Books” again. The allusion of this sentence comes from "Zhuangzi: The Way of Heaven":

Duke Huan was studying in the hall. The wheel was flattened under the hall, and the vertebrae were chiseled up. He asked Duke Huan, "I dare to ask, what are you talking about?" The Duke said, "These are the words of a sage." He said, "What does the sage care about?" The Duke said. "He's dead." He said, "But the readers you read are as bad as the ancients!" Duke Huan said, "If I only study, how can I discuss it? If you have something to say, it's okay, but if you don't, you'll die." Bian said: "I also look at the things I do. If you turn the wheel slowly, it will be sweet but not enough, and if you are sick, it will be painful but not in. If it is not slow or slow, it should be in the hand but in the heart. The mouth cannot speak, but there is a number. In the meantime, the minister cannot be compared to the minister's son, and the minister's son cannot be treated by the minister, so the ancient people will die if they are seventy years old. However, the readers of the king will be like the ancients. "My husband!"

"Gulun" means cutting wood and making wheels. Wheels in ancient China were all made of wood. Even in the 1940s and 1950s, wooden wheels were still commonly used for small and large flat cars in rural areas. The slightly better ones were covered with a layer of rubber skin on the wood surface. Wear-resistant and shock-absorbing. Making wooden wheels is a very difficult technical task. If you are not careful, the wheels you make will not be round enough, and they will bump up and down when you install them on the car. Or they may be round when they are first made, but there are weak links in certain places. It won't be round in a few days.

In the above article, Lun Bian, a master of wheel-making, uses "wheel-making" as a metaphor to say that the secret of making wheels is so exquisite that fathers cannot teach it to their sons. From this, it can be seen that the superb wisdom in the minds of the ancients, How can we record it in writing and spread it to future generations? So he said to Duke Huan of Qi: "The books you read are just the dregs of the predecessors."

As the saying goes, books cannot express what they say, and words cannot express what they mean, and this is what they mean.
