Brief introduction

It is a special term for Shoushan stone carving and a unique artistic expression of Shoushan stone carving. Mr. Pan Zhulan, a famous calligrapher and engraver, pointed out: "The skill is thin, the art cares about it, the thinner the better, not as thin as paper." The implication is that freehand brushwork is the best, simplicity and elution are the best, and this realm is intriguing. "Fine carving art came out late, with a history of 100 years, which gradually evolved from relief techniques. During the reign of Kanggan in the Qing Dynasty, Yang Yuxuan and Zhou Shangjun often carved extremely shallow relief brocade patterns on the continuous patterns around the inkpad and on the edge of the ring. Later, Pan inherited the method of Yang and Zhou, and carved various pictures around the seal to cover up the defects of stone carvings. However, the method of carving has not reached an ideal level, and the artistic conception is too plain and simple to achieve the best concealer effect, but it is just the embryonic form of thin meaning. -On the engraved surface, give full play to the author's rich imagination, carry out conceptual design, make full use of the texture and pretty color of Shoushan stone, and draw on the stone surface with a brush.

Thin composition layout pays attention to artistic conception and charm, just like traditional Chinese painting. Generally, the levels of the scenery should not overlap too much and cross too closely, and the cracks and sand traps on the stone blank should be covered as much as possible. "Art should be done according to materials, composition should be done according to colors, and flaws should be covered up." Make it complex but not chaotic, simple and elegant, Athenian-style in order, neat and beautiful, and integrate sculpture art with painting theory. This is the accumulation of artists' cultural quality, artistic quality and long-term practical experience. The art of thin meaning was developed on the basis of Bo Gu ornamentation and brocade relief of stone carvings in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties. Kangxi began to show signs and Yongzheng was perfect. During the reign of Tongzhi and Guangxu, "Ximen" artist Pan was good at deep knife carving, which laid the foundation for fine carving. By the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, Lin absorbed the essence of Chinese painting, integrated carving and painting in one furnace, took the knife as a ghost, and raised the fine art to a new height, which was a unique art form in Shoushan stone carving.

Products carved with "thin meaning" have always been known as "elegant, exquisite and close to painting". It is a unique art integrating calligraphy, seal cutting and painting, which is between painting and sculpture. The art of "thin meaning" was developed on the basis of Bo Gu ornamentation and brocade-edged relief in lithographs in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties. This unique art began to appear in the Kangxi period, and it was perfected by Yongzheng. Later, during Tongzhi and Guangxu years, Pan, a "Simon" artist, laid the foundation for thin engraving. At the beginning of the 20th century, sculptor Lin absorbed the essence of traditional Chinese painting, fused sculpture and painting in one furnace, and took the knife as a ghostwriter, raising the art of thin ideas to a new level. Therefore, the idea of thinness has become a unique art form in Shoushan stone carving.

Although Bo art is a difficult carving art, many Shoushan stone sculptors have climbed the peak of art since ancient times and carried it forward. During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, Pan, the originator of the later "West School", often carved extremely shallow relief brocade around the stamp pad and continuous patterns on the ring edge or other ornaments, which created a precedent for thin art. Pan and others inherited the methods of Yang and Zhou School and carved various pictures around the seal. From the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, the stone carving art of Shoushan in Fuzhou gradually developed. Lin is a master of the "Western School". He became famous at a young age, but his artistic skills are very weak. In order to specialize in fine thinking and plan for greater development and progress, he resolutely put down the carving knife and turned to study ink painting from a teacher, studying Qin bricks, Hanwa, ancient stone carvings and portraits, calligraphy and painting, stone seal cutting and so on. And understand the brushwork, composition and painting theory of Chinese painting. After five years of study, he mastered it consciously.

Sometimes, there will inevitably be some cracks, sand pits or impure color blocks and stripes on the surface of Yin Zhangshi, even the gemstone products such as Shi Tian and Shuikeng Frozen are hard to be pure and flawless. If these defects appear in print, they cannot be covered by button engraving. Without artistic treatment, it will inevitably affect the grade of lithographs, and excessive carving will easily destroy the true colors of gems. In this case, carving a thin stone surface is the most ideal decoration method.

After Lin, Wang Yanquan, Wang, and others continued to carry forward the carving method of thin meaning, forming an influential "Simon School of Thin Meaning". The main representative works are Night Tour in Chibi by Wang Yanquan and Fishing in Leng Jiang by Wang.

Since the new era, the older generation who graduated from art colleges have also made great achievements in their creation. For example, Lin Wenju, a young sculptor, not only has a family background, but also has a solid foundation in Chinese painting. At the same time, he personally met Lin, devoted himself to research, and got the true meaning from it. He is especially good at birds and bamboos, and has published "Lin Wenju's Art of Sparse Meaning". Liu Aizhu, a female sculptor, graduated from an art school, studied under her tutelage, and also got Lin's Humble Biography. Her humble figure statue is also cherished by the world.

The "Eastern School" is also full of talented people, who have made great achievements in thin carving, such as Lin Youqing, Lin, Lin Shoushi and Guo. Their thin works have a unique style. In particular, Lin Youqing and his son Lin Shoushi, the "East Gate Celebration", have a completely different style from Ximen Qing. Their works have sharp knife light, strong layering and far-reaching artistic conception. Today, Guo, the master of Shoushan Stone, is eclectic, self-contained, full of life, high artistic realm, deep cultural connotation, picturesque and perfect.

Shoushan stone's thin art can stand out from folk crafts, melt the painting theory of Chinese painting into stone, condense the world into square inches, and become an art with unique humanistic atmosphere, relying on the artist's endless pursuit spirit. Thanks to the unremitting efforts and continuous practice of several generations represented by Lin, Boyi works have become paintings and poems, and its artistic form, style and appreciation value are self-contained in Shoushan stone carving art, which can be called a wonderful flower in China's traditional art treasure house. It is precisely because of this that Mr. Guo, a contemporary master of thin thinking, will sigh: "I call it' knife painting', that is, painting with a knife instead of a pen on a stone, but it is more difficult than painting. In particular, the echoes in the distance, the ups and downs of reality, are not meaningful enough, and freezing for three feet is not a cold day. "

Because of picturesque scenery and less consumables, it is especially suitable for carving precious original stones such as Tian Huangshi and Furong Stone. Tian Huangshi is known as the "three easy gold", and its value is calculated, so even the stone chips are reluctant to be lost when carving.

Thin meaning is like a slightly fluttering Chinese painting, which is widely used and emphasizes artistic conception. The content includes figures, landscapes, flowers and birds, insects, melons and fruits, etc.
