The production of iron paintings originated in the Song Dynasty and prevailed in the Northern Song Dynasty. During the reign of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty, the iron paintings in Wuhu, Anhui Province became self-contained and gradually became famous all over the world. Wuhu iron painting began in Kangxi period of Qing Dynasty, and was made by Wuhu iron worker Tang Peng and Wuhu painter Xiaoyun. According to the Preface of Iron Painting Songs in the Qing Dynasty's Wuhu County Records, Tang Peng, a native of Wuhu, lived next door to the studio, and the painter called him SPI. People in the scholar-bureaucrat class praised it as "holding the wall and elegant drama", and scholars even praised it and praised it with poetry. Zhu Wenzao, a epigraphist in the Qing Dynasty, made a vivid description in the poem Painting on Iron: "At first glance, like ink-splashed silk, the landscape figures are all empty. The wind moves the orchid bamboo beautifully, and the snow urges the old pole to loosen. Huaxuan makes people feel chilly and want to add clothes on a hot day. It is most suitable for birch candles. On a breezy night, thousands of pistils make jadeite rocks. The old traces of the Yuan and Ming Dynasties * * * see the truth, and the gas is reduced. " He believes that the paintings of painters in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties were also eclipsed by iron paintings. Liang, a poet in Qing Dynasty, called iron painting "all wonderful" and "rare in the world". He wrote "Song of Iron Painting" and said, "Who told me that the magic is a finger twist, and Jiangnan grabs the pen? ..... This painting is easy to change, and this painting will last forever. "

Wuhu Iron Painting has participated in the World Expo in Paris, France and the Plastic Art Exhibition in Budapest, Hungary, and has been exhibited in more than 20 countries and regions such as Japan, Kuwait, Italy, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong. During the period of 1958, Mao Zedong and Liu Shaoqi successively enjoyed the iron paintings of Wuhu in Anhui Provincial Museum, praising their exquisite skills and carrying them forward.

From 1959 to 1960, the Great Hall of the People displayed the large-scale iron paintings "Welcome Pine", "Meishan Reservoir" and iron calligraphy "Spring and Snow in Qinyuan" created by the old artist Chu Yanqing and several disciples, and the iron calligraphy "Poetry of the Long March" displayed in Chairman Mao Memorial Hall was all representative works of Wuhu iron paintings.
