Shi Naian (1296—— about 137 1), whose real name is Yan Duan, was born in Xinghua, Jiangsu, and was a novelist in the late Yuan and early Ming Dynasties. At the age of 36, he was a scholar, then abandoned his official position and returned to Li. He wrote books behind closed doors, collected heroic deeds such as Song Jiang, and finally created Water Margin, one of the "Four Great Classical Novels".
