The relocation of the Qing Muling Mausoleum

Why did Emperor Daoguang demolish the imperial mausoleum that had been built in the Dongling Tomb and rebuild the Imperial Tomb in the Xiling Tomb? Did Emperor Daoguang, who promoted frugality not long after he took the throne, really abandon the Baohuayu mausoleum because water seeped into the underground palace and the quality of the project did not meet the ten thousand-year eternal standards? And in order to find the Ruyi Feng Shui treasure land again, he spent two years and asked many important court officials to search all over the world. Is it really necessary to do this?

When Emperor Daoguang moved his mausoleum from Dongling, 2 emperor mausoleums, 2 empress mausoleums and 2 concubine gardens were built within the boundaries of Dongling. The sites of these mausoleums were carefully selected by Feng Shui experts after a long period of exploration. They are all considered as Feng Shui treasures and auspicious places. Emperor Daoguang clearly knew that his grandfather, Emperor Qianlong, had the edict of "Zhao Mu Xiang Jian", and directly pointed out that his grandson should build a mausoleum in Dongling. Moreover, Dongling has so much good land, why didn't Emperor Daoguang The mausoleum was built in Dongling, but it was moved to Xiling?

Faced with public opinion and psychological pressure that violated the ancestral system, and faced with his own personal interests, Emperor Daoguang finally gave Emperor Qianlong's heartfelt and repeated instructions: "The descendants must not make divination elsewhere." The legacy of "Auspicious land, harming the people's property" was still forgotten. Emperor Daoguang knew this better than anyone else, but in order to achieve his inner secret, he still sent people to Zhili Province and The various places near Beijing are close to each other. Among the many places that have been surveyed, there are indeed many auspicious places. For example, Weijiagou in Yi County later became the auspicious place for Emperor Guangxu, and Chongling was built; Nanqi Village " The dragon spirit is very strong, both veins fall together, and they form a hole to the south and a hole to the east. The dragon and tiger sand surrounds the soul, the hall is wide and the color of the earth is bright and moist." At a place behind the mountain in Lianggezhuang, "the dragon comes from a long distance. Crossing the gorge on the flat ground, upright star peaks protrude, the veins form caves, and the sand and water surround it." "Looking at the color of the soil, it is extremely clean and fine." "The hall is fully regulated." However, these auspicious places did not really move Emperor Daoguang. On the contrary, as soon as the auspicious land in Longquan Valley in Xiling was mentioned, it immediately aroused his great interest. What is the reason for the ten thousand years of auspiciousness that makes this "model" emperor who "respects the heaven and the ancestors" and "obeys the constitution" so bold and courageous to violate the ancestral precepts without any scruples and bravely break the "Zhao Mu" What about the system of mutual construction?

People at that time were forced by the authority of the emperor and in order to protect themselves, they did not dare to speak or guess. But even so, Emperor Daoguang still felt guilty in his heart, because the truth could not be fake, and the fake was Not really. Later, two poems by Emperor Daoguang and their annotations revealed the secret of why he worked so hard to find the site of the new mausoleum, and that it must be in Xiling.

It turns out that on the left side of the platform in front of the Longen Hall of the Longquanyu Mausoleum in Xiling, Yi County, there is a stone building with two poems by Emperor Daoguang engraved on it. Needless to say, it is better to change the divination if you work hard. Longquan thinks it is for me. ①

Human feelings are deplorable and hypocritical, and destiny is hard to deny.

The lush mountains and rivers are full of royal energy, and I mourn for my concubine near the mausoleum area. ②

Because the gains and losses of the times are nothing but teachings, the road to control the world is long and circuitous.

How dare you follow the various systems, or you may be able to achieve a scale in the future.

My heart is still self-conscious and I am afraid, so I am cautious and frugal in my life. ③

Mu Zhang'a, the minister of the Ministry of Industry and Engineering, who was ordered to undertake the construction of the Longquanyu Jidi Project, asked me to make a detailed drawing of the scale of the construction, and it was formed into six rhymes to express my ambition.

In the third month of Mengchun, Yiwei, the 15th year of Daoguang's reign, I wrote a letter to Huan Yubi

(1) Because Baohuayu was not managed well and the regulations were contrary to my wishes, I had to change the auspicious site and ordered the jubilee After all the kindness and kindness went through the Spring and Autumn Period, I finally came to this place and decided to do it. All scales must be frugal and not complicated. This is why Emperor Kao Renzong Rui was not careful. The emperor and his concubine, Queen Xiao Shurui, visited An Changling. The mountains and rivers were auspicious, and the Longquan Valley was in the west of Changling. Five clouds were in sight, and the attachment of the descendants was in keeping with their long-cherished wishes. ③ Prudence is the virtue of being thrifty, but Huaiyongtu is my original ambition. This time, I have decided to reduce the scale of the auspicious place. I have already issued an edict. Mu Zhang and others will definitely respect my ambition and follow it respectfully.) The Jibu Longquan project has been completed. , Yong'an Erhou Hejia City.

Mountains and rivers meet in pleasant time, but new and old things are painful as time passes.

It is sad to see flowers in the world, but it is sad to see the flowers in the world, and sigh in dreams for a lifetime. ①

Looking east towards Zhufu and looking closer, I am extremely kind and loving. ②

On the third day of the ninth month of the reign of Emperor Daoguang, Empress Xiaomucheng and Empress Xiaoshencheng arrived at Longquanyu Xiangdian from Zi Palace, where they were laid to rest. A funeral ceremony was held on December 11th. .

(①Longquan Valley was built as an auspicious place for thousands of years since the fifth month of Xinmao in Daoguang. It has been managed and completed now. I personally came to inspect it, overlooking the arches of the mountains, and inspecting the meanders of Sichuan and Xin. The scale is comfortable for Su Zhi, and it is designated as a blessed area with lush greenery. Suji enshrines Empress Xiaomu and Empress Xiaoshen’s Zi Palace together with the spiritual site of An. The combination of the prosperous phase and the practice of Chen coincides with the warmth of the wind and the rising sun, silently caressing the passing of the stream of light, not only Queen Xiaomu's wife, but also a long time later, Queen Xiaoshen's cloud has never returned. She has seen the three autumns, joys and sorrows, separation and reunion, It's really like looking at flowers, whether they are prosperous or withering, how can you send dreams to them? If you can trace the past, don't be sad. ② The auspicious situation is close to Changling, and the green peaks are all in the present; Under the knees. Looking at the majesty of Shen Gao makes me feel deeply sad. )

There is this sentence in the first poem: "The lush mountains and rivers are full of royal energy, and I mourn for my concubine near the mausoleum."

"And in the second poem, it is written again: "Looking east to Zhufu, looking closer, I am extremely kind and loving. "The meaning of these two poems clearly expresses what he wants to say in his heart, that is, my mausoleum not only has excellent Feng Shui, but it is also close to my father's mausoleum, so that I can always cherish the kindness of my parents.

If the expression of these two lines of poetry is not obvious and clear, then the annotation made by him is more straightforward and clear. Emperor Daoguang said in the annotation:

Because of the poor management of Baohua Valley and the regulations that were not in my way, I had to change the auspicious site. I specially ordered Xi En and others to visit it. After going through the Spring and Autumn Period, I came to the site in person to review it. In all scales of work, we must be frugal and do not allow complexity.

Emperor Ren Zongrui and his concubine Xiao Shurui are dedicated to An Changling, the mountains and rivers are royal, and Yu Rui. Zhongxiang. The Longquan Valley is about eight miles away from Changling. The five clouds are in sight, and the attachment of the ministers is in keeping with their long-cherished wish.

Nine months later, Emperor Daoguang arrived. In the annotation of the second poem, here is a further explanation of Longquanyu, an auspicious place that has made my heart full of joy for thousands of years:

The auspicious place is close to Changling, looking at the green and subtle peaks, all At present, Lian Ruiqi is on Qiaoshan, looking at the majesty of Shen Gao, and feeling deeply sad.

Emperor Daoguang's comments probably mean: "I am because of the treasure." The management of Huayu was not good, and the regulations were against my original intention, so I had to find another good place. Xi En and others were specially ordered to search everywhere. After several years, they finally found this treasure land. I personally came here to inspect it, and looking at the surrounding hills and rivers, I realized that the regulations for building the mausoleum were very much in line with my original intention. My parents, Emperor Renzongrui (referring to Jiaqing), and his concubine, Empress Xiao Shurui, are enshrined in Changling. The mountains and rivers here are royal, and Yurui is auspicious. And this Longquan Valley is to the west of Changling, about eight miles away, with five clouds in sight, and the same origin. It is a place I particularly yearn for, and it is completely in line with my usual wishes. Longquanyu Jidi is close to Changling, with Cuiping Mountain as a barrier, connected with the auspicious air of Qiaoshan Mountain, and arranged in sequence. This is the majestic mountain given by God, so that I can deeply express my gratitude to my father.

At this time, we have been told clearly and unmistakably that the reason why Emperor Daoguang finally chose Longquanyu was because Longquanyu was close to his parents’ Changling Mausoleum and could be the place where his parents were. From then on, he could realize his many goals The wish of "the son is buried with the father". In this regard, Emperor Xianfeng, the son of Emperor Daoguang, said more straightforwardly: "My emperor is very thoughtful about filial piety. He said that this land is not only winding with dragon veins, but also close to the Changling Mausoleum, so I can rest on my knees." Therefore, Emperor Daoguang wanted to achieve his goals. In order to fulfill his private wish, he still tore off his hypocritical veil and left all his ancestral precepts and family laws behind. Fortunately, Emperor Daoguang held the imperial power in his hands and finally achieved his goal by any means necessary.

For this reason, Emperor Daoguang said in such a brazen and arrogant way at the beginning of his poem: "Don't say that heavy work should be done to change divination, Longquan is thought to be waiting for me." This means don't think that it is better to change divination. Moving the mausoleum from Dongling to Xiling was a waste of people and money. The auspicious land of Longquanyu was given to him by God. This was God's will. God's will cannot be violated, so it is reasonable to move the mausoleum, and others should not make irresponsible remarks.

Although the main purpose of Emperor Daoguang writing these two poems was to defend his move of the mausoleum from Dongling to Xiling. However, through careful interpretation and analysis of these two poems, we can see through the phenomenon to see the essence, and from this we find that Emperor Daoguang’s covert defense revealed the real reason for moving the mausoleum, because he wanted to be buried next to his parents. , and found Shangjijiarang Longquan Valley, which is more ideal than Baohua Valley. Therefore, it is no wonder that he was shocked when it came to the water seepage issue. It turned out that Emperor Daoguang had other agendas. He only pitied the officials who took care of it. Due to his personal desires, he not only cost the country countless money and food, but also caused them to follow him. Unlucky all the way, he was fined, lost money, demoted and sent to the army. As for how much money was spent and how much manpower was expended, those are not very important things. What is important is to be satisfied with yourself. Therefore, from the matter of building the mausoleum, it can be clearly seen that the "obeying the Constitution" and "caring for the people's power" that Emperor Daoguang usually expressed were not true thoughts at all.
