Why did Van Gogh cut off his ear?

The first is self-harm.

Van Gogh was crazy and not understood by the world, and was finally sent to a mental hospital. Van Gogh left his last words: "Pain is life." Many people tend to think that Van Gogh's illness caused him to hurt himself, which led to the act of cutting off his ears.

Some people think that the direct cause of his self-harm is that his younger brother Theo is about to get married. Van Gogh was worried that his younger brother would no longer give him assistance because of economic pressure, so he chose to hurt himself.

The second view is caused by Gauguin.

1888, Van Gogh moved to arles in the south of France and invited his good friend Gauguin to live with him. During these two months, the two men often quarreled and even fought because of their different personalities and artistic views.

Some people think that Van Gogh's earlobe was accidentally cut by Gauguin. Van Gogh claimed that he didn't remember what happened that night, but wrote in a letter to Theo: "Fortunately, Gauguin was not equipped with machine guns and other dangerous weapons of war."

Another way of saying this is to keep Gauguin as a good friend. Gauguin was tired of the bad life with Van Gogh and finally left. The lonely Van Gogh shut himself in his room and cut off his ear. Maybe only physical pain can alleviate his mental pain.

The part of Van Gogh's ear that was cut off is said to have been given to a prostitute.

Personality influence

Van Gogh was a pioneer of expressionism, which deeply influenced the art of the 20th century, especially the Fauvism and German Expressionism.

Van Gogh's works, which once puzzled most of his contemporaries, have been printed on postcards and calendars and become bestsellers. Entrepreneurs flocked to bring Van Gogh's name into the commercial field, such as Van Gogh tie, Van Gogh ballpoint pen, Van Gogh soap, Van Gogh movies and Van Gogh opera. Their works are far ahead in the international oil painting auction market.
