Poetry of the Imprisoned Emperor

"Happy Meeting"

Dynasties: Five Dynasties

Author: Li Yu

Original text:

Lin Hua Thanks Chunhong, it was too hasty. Helplessly, cold rain comes in the morning and wind comes in the evening.

The tears of rouge will make you drunk, how long will it last? Naturally, life grows with hatred, and water grows with the east.

This poem is believed to have been written after Li Yu was captured in 975 AD (the eighth year of Kaibao, the eighth year of Taizu's reign in the Northern Song Dynasty). After the fall of the Southern Tang Dynasty, Li Yu was captured and headed north, where he stayed in Bianjing (now Kaifeng, Henan) for more than two years. The life of being imprisoned made him feel great pain. His letter to the people in the old palace of Jinling (now Nanjing, Jiangsu Province) said, "During the day and night, I only wash my face with tears" (Volume 2 of Wang Zhi's "Silent Notes"). This word was written when the author was a prisoner.

"Yu Meiren"

Dynasty: Five Dynasties

Author: Li Yu

Original text:

What are the flowers in spring and the moon in autumn? Time? How much do you know about the past? There was an east wind in the small building last night, and the motherland could not bear to look back at the bright moon.

The carved railings and jade inlays should still be there, but the beauty has been changed. How much sorrow can you have? Just like a river of spring water flowing eastward

"Poppy Poppy" is Li Yu's masterpiece and also the last word of Empress Li. It is said that on the night of his birthday (July 7th) ("Qixi Festival"), he ordered singers to make music in his residence and sing the lyrics of his new work "Poppy Beauty", which was well-known outside. Song Taizong was furious when he heard this and ordered people to give him medicinal wine to poison him to death. This poem expresses the endless sorrow of a subjugated king through the contrast between the past and the present.
