The meaning and story of this poem

The original seven-step poem

Boil beans for soup,

Think of it as juice.

The mash burns under the pot,

The beans are crying in the kettle.

Born from the same root,

Why are you in such a hurry to blow each other up?

Meaning: beans are boiled in a pot, and the residue of beans is filtered out, leaving bean juice and making paste food. The beanstalk burns under the pot, and the beans cry in the pot. You and I are from the same root. How can you torture me in such a hurry?

This poem uses seeds and beans from the same root to compare brothers with the same father and mother, and uses seeds and beans to compare brothers who kill their younger brothers, which shows the author's dissatisfaction and disgust at pushing and killing each other between brothers.

This allusion comes from Liu Yiqing's Shi Shuo Xin Yu Literature in the Southern Dynasties: trying to get Dong to write a seven-step poem, and if it fails, implementing Dafa. The answer is a poem: "Boil beans as soup and soak them as juice. Glutinous rice is burned in the kettle, and beans weep in the kettle; This is the same root, why rush to speculate with each other? " The emperor was deeply ashamed.

Cao Zhi, the third son of Cao Cao, was gifted since childhood and loved by his father. After the death of Cao Cao, his brother Cao Pi succeeded to the throne as Wang Wei of Cao Cao, and later usurped the throne and proclaimed himself emperor. Because Cao Pi was worried that leaving Cao Zhi and Cao Xiong (the fourth son) would have future troubles, he put pressure on them on the grounds that his father did not visit him when he died. Cao Xiong committed suicide because of fear. But Cao Zhi was brought into the imperial court. Finally, Bian Shi, the mother of four brothers Xelloss, began to plead, and Xelloss reluctantly gave Cao Azhi a chance to blurt out a poem within seven steps, otherwise he would be killed without forgiveness. Cao Zhi wrote this seven-step poem. Cao Pi understood the truth in Cao Zhi's poems: if he killed Cao Zhi, he would be laughed at by the world, but his greed still made him lose his mind, so he put Cao Zhi under house arrest. Finally, Cao Zhi died of depression under his brother's house arrest.

works appreciation

This poem was written in a purely metaphorical way. The language is simple and clear, and there is no need to explain it. Just a little dredging in individual words and phrases, its significance is self-evident. The poet's clever metaphor and clever language blurted out in an instant, which was really amazing. For thousands of years, the word "born from the same root, why bother to fry each other" has become a common language for people to persuade them to avoid killing each other, which shows that this poem is widely circulated among the people.

Through the daily phenomenon of burning beans and boiling beans, Cao Zhi's inner grief and indignation were expressed.

Truth degree

The authenticity of the seven-step poem has always been controversial. Among them, what Guo Moruo said is more reasonable. He thinks that Cao Zhi's seven-step poem: "Look closely, I'm afraid there are many collateral components." This novel was created because later generations sympathized with Cao Zhi and were dissatisfied with Cao Pi. In fact, if Cao Pi wants to kill Cao Zhi, why use forcing him to write poetry as an excuse? It's not that he doesn't know. And if you really want to kill him, you can still kill him after writing the poem. Why are you' deeply ashamed' just by being laughed at? So the authenticity of this poem is really less. But because of writing this poem, Cao Zhi maintained sympathy for thousands of years, and Cao Pi was excluded for thousands of years. This is really the so-called' who's behind'. However, some people questioned his statement. Some people say that Cao Pi made Cao Zhi's seven steps into a poem just as an excuse to kill him. He thought that Cao Zhi would never succeed, but he didn't expect Cao Zhi's talent to be so outstanding. At that time, even Cao Pi himself was a little touched. In order to keep his reputation and stabilize the world, Cao Zhi was released.

There is another saying: Cao Zhi made a mistake, and Cao Pi deliberately let him go. Knowing that Cao Zhi had the intelligence to write a poem in seven steps, he ordered him to write a poem in seven steps.
