The Origin of Elephant Trunk Mountain in Guilin

Since ancient times, people have said that "Guilin's landscape is the best in the world". There are really beautiful mountains, water, caves and stones, just like a fairyland. Anyone who travels to Guilin will be deeply impressed by Elephant Trunk Mountain at the confluence of Lijiang River and Yangjiang River. The whole mountain is like an elephant standing by the river, stretching its neck to absorb water, which is unique and magical. There are many touching stories about this elephant trunk mountain in the local area.

According to legend, this elephant trunk mountain was transformed from the gods in the sky. It turns out that this elephant is a fairy who carries a treasure bottle for the Emperor of Heaven. One year, Emperor Tiandi went on a hunting tour, passing by Guilin with beautiful scenery, with a mighty ceremonial, one hundred elephants, hundreds of horses and dozens of chariots. The army of the Emperor of Heaven trampled on a large area of rural areas, flowers and crops were ravaged, pigs, horses, cattle and sheep were slaughtered, and the beautiful Guilin was thousands of miles away.

An elephant fell ill on the roadside because of fatigue. Seeing that he was dying, the Emperor of Heaven left him with other military forces. Just as the elephant was dying, an old man named Xianggong Xiangpo saved it. Under the care of Xiang Gongxiang, the elephant recovered quickly. In order to repay the old man for saving his life, the elephant rushed to the field to sow seeds for the public and farmers, and vowed never to return to heaven. The farmers came to thank the elephants for their help.

The Emperor of Heaven ordered the elephant slave to go back to Guilin to look for the sick statue, because an elephant was missing from the sacrificial ceremony and the formation was very ugly. When the elephant slave came to Guilin, he saw the elephant ploughing the fields for the farmers and scolded it for its identity and face of absence. The elephant said, "Can't you, me and the Emperor of Heaven just eat the grain grown by farmers and do something for them?" I'm never going back to be a slave to the Emperor of Heaven. "

When the Emperor heard that the elephant refused to return to heaven, he came to catch the elephant with a heavenly soldier. The elephant raised its long nose and bravely defended itself. It fought fiercely with the heavenly generals for three days and nights, bruised and exhausted, but the elephant remained indomitable and did not stop fighting.

Seeing that the elephant was so brave, the Emperor of Heaven came up with a vicious plan. He said to the elephant, "You are a brave soldier. I like you very much. Let you be reincarnated. " With that, he returned to heaven with the heavenly generals.

The elephant listened to the words of the heavenly emperor and completely lost his vigilance. So it went to Lijiang River to drink water to quench its thirst. Just as it hung down its long nose to absorb water, the Emperor of Heaven crept up behind it and plunged his long sword into the elephant's body, leaving only a short hilt on its back.

Although the elephant died, it didn't fall down. Over time, the statue became a magnificent elephant trunk mountain. From a distance, the trunk, trunk and tail are distinct everywhere. The bottle-shaped pagoda on the mountain is said to be the hilt left by the Emperor of Heaven. In fact, this ancient pagoda was built only in the Ming Dynasty, and it is engraved with the statue of Samantabhadra, which is called "Pu Xian Tower" or "Aquarius Tower".
