Drunken Book at Wanghu Tower

Su Shi

Black clouds rolled over the ink but did not cover the mountain,

White rain jumped into the boat.

The ground wind blows away suddenly,

The water below the lake building is like the sky.

[Note]

1. Wanghu Tower: beside the West Lake in Hangzhou.

2. Turning ink: Black clouds like ink roll up in the sky. Cover: cover, cover up.

3. Jumping beads: Describes the raindrops dancing in the boat like pearls.

4. Ground wind: Wind picked up from the ground.

[Meaning of the poem]

1)

The dark clouds in the sky spread like spilled black ink, and they have not yet completely covered the whole sky. Covered by a mountain.

2)

The big white raindrops were like beads, splashing and jumping on the boat randomly.

3)

Suddenly a strong wind blew, blowing away the dark clouds in the sky without a trace.

4)

The color of the water below Wanghu Tower is the same as the blue sky.

[Explanation]

This poem describes a rainstorm that comes and goes on the West Lake in summer. The first sentence describes the rolling black clouds, the second sentence describes the pouring rain, and the last two sentences describes the sky clearing up after the rain.

How rapidly nature changes, and how magical the poet's pen is.
