Dongpo made no secret of his special liking for Tao Yuanming's poems. He put Tao Yuanming's poems above the great poets of past dynasties, and bluntly said that Li Bai and Du Fu were not as good as Yuan Ye Ming.
Poetry is common in the world, but it follows the ancients and began in Dongpo. During his stay in Danzhou, Dongpo pursued Tao Yuanming's poems, "hundreds of them before and after, until he was satisfied." The book Zi Zhan and Tao Yuanming's Poems was born.
