Author: [Tang] Bai Juyi
Genre: ancient poetry, seven-character Yuefu.
This is the twenty-ninth song of new Yuefu. The title of this poem in the original version is "red embroidered carpet", but the text is "red thread carpet". "Red carpet" is a kind of silk carpet. This kind of red carpet was woven by weavers in Xuanzhou (now Xuancheng County, Anhui Province). According to the Records of Geography of New Tang Dynasty, there is a "red carpet with silk thread" in Xuanzhou Tugong, which is called "red carpet" in this paper. This poem satirizes the behavior of Xuanzhou satrap officials to please the emperor by paying tribute to the red carpet in Xuanzhou, and emphatically reveals that the supreme ruler wastes manpower and material resources at will for his own dissolute enjoyment, regardless of the hard work of weavers. It is obvious from the last two sentences that wasting so much silk and labor to weave carpets will inevitably affect many people's inability to put on clothes. The author's direct condemnation has strong feelings.
