The Original and Translation of Wild Chrysanthemum by Yang Wanli

Yang Wanli's Wild Chrysanthemum and its translation are as follows:

I haven't been a poet yet, and the situation is like the Double Ninth Festival. There is a dark color in the field of political destiny, and I hope that no one will lose fragrance. It's too late to meet the mid-levels, so I'm busy folding a yellow one. Flowers should scoff at Dongli people and plead with Weng Tao.

Translation:

I don't give dry food to literati, and I don't want to be appreciated by laymen on the Double Ninth Festival. It is precisely because it is quieter and lighter in the wild. I don't want to lose my fragrance because there is no one. It was already evening, and I met wild chrysanthemums on the green hillside. Even if you are in a hurry, you should fold a pale yellow chrysanthemum. Wild chrysanthemums may sneer at those domestic chrysanthemums, because domestic chrysanthemums are actually seeking Tao Yuanming's favor.

Wild chrysanthemum is a kind of small yellow flower similar to chrysanthemum, which is not very noticeable compared with chrysanthemum. But the poet endowed it with poetry and made it occupy a place in the poetry circle.

The first half of the poem is written in the style of restraining before promoting. "I have never been a poet, and the situation is like the Double Ninth Festival." There is a poem in Qu Yuan's Lisao, "Drink Mulan in the morning, and autumn chrysanthemum will be lost in the evening", which means that autumn chrysanthemum is chrysanthemum, not wild chrysanthemum.

Chongyang has the custom of enjoying chrysanthemums, and two sentences about wild chrysanthemums are unknown, which have not been adopted by literati into the literary world and have not been loved by the secular. The word "situation" makes the tone of the second sentence close to that of the first sentence, indicating a further step.

Tao Yuanming loves chrysanthemums. He planted many chrysanthemums under the east fence beside the house, and there is a poem "Pick chrysanthemums under the east fence and see Nanshan leisurely". These two sentences mean that the wild chrysanthemums must be sneering at Huang Ju by the hedge-they are inviting poets like Tao Yuanming to spoil them in order to gain the glory of the poet's appreciation.

The implication is that the poet's eyes are only on chrysanthemums, not on wild chrysanthemums; Wild chrysanthemums have their own character of not inviting pets to win glory, dismissing those courtyards that invite pets to win glory, but sneering.
