Hou Tongzeng (1591-1645), Han nationality, was born in Zidi Village (now Huacao Town, Minhang District), Jiading, Suzhou (now part of Shanghai) in the Ming Dynasty. The name is Guangcheng and the courtesy name is Yuzhan. Ming Dynasty gave it to Taichang Shaoqing Hou Zhenyang's eldest son, who was a Jinshi in the fifth year of Tianqi (1625). He is good at poetry and prose, and can calligraphy. He once participated in politics in Zhejiang Province. In the first year of Hongguang (the second year of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty, 1645), the people of Jiading revolted against the Qing Dynasty. He and Huang Chunyao were promoted as leaders. They set up troops to defend the city on June 17, until the city was broken on July 4, and they held on for more than ten days. After the city was destroyed, he and his two sons threw themselves into Yechi to die for their country.
