Alas! Fate is not smooth, and the road is difficult and dangerous. It is easy for Feng Tang to grow old, but it is difficult for Li Guang to become a marquis. Demoting Jia Yi to Changsha was not an unwise monarch; asking Liang Hong to live in seclusion on the seaside was not an era of political prosperity. What can be relied on is that a gentleman can detect subtle signs of things, and a knowledgeable person knows the laws of society and human affairs. When you get older, you should be more ambitious. How can you change your aspirations when you are gray-haired? Difficulties will make you stronger and never give up your lofty aspirations. After drinking the water from Tanquan, I still feel refreshed; even in the dry rut, I can still be optimistic and cheerful. Although the North Sea is far away, it can still be reached by riding a whirlwind; although the days of youth have passed, it is not too late to cherish the years to come. Meng Chang was of noble character, but had no enthusiasm for serving the country; how could he follow the example of Ruan Ji, who was wild and unruly and returned in tears when there was no way out?
I am a low-status scholar. Although he was the same age as Zhongjun, he did not have the opportunity to serve the country. Like Ban Chao, he had the ambition to serve in the army, and he also admired Zongti's desire to "ride the wind and waves". I would rather give up my life's fame and wealth and go thousands of miles away to serve my father morning and night.
I dare not say that he is a talent like Xie Xuan, but he has met many famous people. In a few days, when I go to my father to listen to his teachings, I must be as courteous as Kong Li, and answer questions fluently. Today I raised my sleeves and bowed to see Yan Gong, and I was very happy to board the dragon gate. If Sima Xiangru had not met Yang Deyi, he would have had no choice but to pat his poems and sigh; today I met a bosom friend like Zhong Ziqi, what shame would there be in playing the song "High Mountains and Flowing Waters"?
Alas! Famous places cannot last forever, and grand banquets cannot be seen again. The gathering at Lanting has disappeared, and Jinguyuan has become a ruin.
