Fang Lu's famous evaluation.

Text/Professor China Academy of Art Famous critic-Mao Jianbo

Mr. Pan Tianshou said: The West Lake is beautiful. But it is not easy to draw. Indeed, since the West Lake in Hangzhou became famous, painters in all previous dynasties have described it as full of fragrance, but it is the Liuchuanwei of the West Lake in the Song and Xia Dynasties that really won the spirit of the West Lake, which is rare. Fang Lu, a famous contemporary printmaker, followed the trace of traditional woodcut watermark and was fascinated by the soft waves of the West Lake, winning the reputation of "the hometown of the West Lake". 65438+1October 8? /kloc-in 0/3, Professor Fang Lu once again exhibited his watermark woodcut works with the West Lake as the king at the Zhejiang Museum at the foot of the lonely mountain of the West Lake. We made a special trip to interview him.

Fang Lu, male, 1932, from Kunshan, Jiangsu. 1955 was admitted to the printmaking department of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now China Academy of Art). After graduation, I taught around. Accompanied by the West Lake, I realized the unique beauty of the West Lake landscape. The ancients thought it was appropriate to visit the West Lake on a moonlit night, in rain, in fog and after snow. Professor Fang Lu also likes to show the West Lake, which is full of wind, fog and silver makeup. Fang Lu borrowed from the woodcut watermarking technique that started from the trip to Shizhuzhai in Nanjing in the17th century, abandoned the extensive use of general black-and-white tone modulation, and boldly used color changes to enrich the picture on the basis of retaining the knife taste and ignorance of woodcut prints. Through the "water halo" technique in the tone modulation of rice paper watermark, the traditional woodcut watermark achieved a high degree of harmony in content and form. Among his works, misty rain in the West and morning play present the wonders of the West Lake, where there are many mountains and Kong Yu. A midsummer in Xiling reflects the beautiful scenery of the West Lake in June described in Yang Wanli's poems as "the lotus leaves are infinitely green and the lotus flowers are of different colors". Under the moonlit night, Autumn Moon Ping and Santan Yin Yue highlight the West Lake's realm of "all eyes are covered with cold light all night, and the ice wheel grows in the sky". Reading Fang Lu's paintings means that there are poems in them and they are full of interest.

In Fang Lu's "West Lake Series" works, a horizontal line tends to be straight. This line is not only a portrayal of the natural scenery of the West Lake connecting the lake with a dike, but also adds a sense of tranquility to its picture. But straight lines are easy to cause stagnation, but they are not aggressive.

It should be pointed out that Professor Fang Lu's road to printmaking is broad. While creating watermark woodcuts, he also engaged in mimeographed woodcuts. In his works, there are not only the first pass in the world to show the Great Wall of Wan Li, but also the golden autumn of the Yellow River to show the natural hazards of the Yellow River, and even the dusty moonlight in the desert. In his paintings, the West Lake is shown, but people can't put it down. As far as aesthetic expression is concerned, the other 10,000 faces are just a carrier under Fang Lu's brush. The real picture conveys his aesthetic perception of misty rain and haze in Jiangnan water town, and conveys his praise of quiet and peaceful life. We should pay special attention to Fang Lu's works here.

In China, since the Tang Dynasty, the technology of watermark copying woodcut has been developed. During the "Apocalypse" and "Wanli" of Ming Dynasty, the watermarking technology was more perfect. At that time, Dianzhuzhai Calligraphy and Painting Manual was very successful in blurring ink color and copying Chinese painting. Since Mr. Lu Xun strongly advocated woodcut art creation in 1930s, some printmakers absorbed traditional watermarking techniques and explored the artistic creation of watermark woodcut by self-painting, self-engraving and self-printing.

Professor Fang Lu has been engaged in the research of watermark woodcut for more than ten years, and he is the best among many watermark woodcut artists. He created many watermark woodcuts representing the West Lake and the water towns in the south of the Yangtze River. I like these works very much, for example: misty rain, west lake beating morning, first snow, like a dream in Xiling, misty rain in Chuyang, silver posture in March, spring rain in West Lake and so on. Looking at these pleasing works, I can't help applauding his achievements in spirit, phonology, color and modeling!

The reason why we have achieved such brilliant results. The key lies in his long-term in-depth observation, experience and research on the West Lake and the water towns in the south of the Yangtze River. Only by having real feelings, touching real feelings and grasping the essential beauty of the West Lake can he create such touching woodcut works. For example, through the combination of blocks and lines in the air, Yu Yan Xizi's works organically form a far-reaching "fresh, elegant and charming picture".

Watermark woodcut is different from other paintings in that it is between the interest of knife and wood and the change of moisture. The rigor and boldness of the knife cutting, the change of point, present and multi-level have a unique taste. For example, Professor Fang Lu's handling of the silver posture of watermark woodcut works. There is a strong contrast between black and white in the whole painting. Under the horizontal combination of black, white and gray, the leaves are radial, and the knife method is smooth and expressive when the twigs play intermittently. In particular, the interpenetration between the color of twigs and water has formed a subtle charm and is full of interest.

In the treatment of color, through the author's wonderful conception, the tone of each painting can be perfectly combined with the connotation of the work. Then, through the changes of cold and warm, light and shade, and reality, a seemingly simple but extremely rich color effect is formed. Such as the spring rain in the West Lake, the faint gray-green tone is set off by the looming drizzle, with faint colors and rich layers, which creates a unique elegant atmosphere in the south of the Yangtze River in spring, which makes people daydream and intoxicated.

Professor Fang Lu's watermark woodcut works not only inherit and absorb the essence of traditional painting art in China, but also greatly enrich the expression form of watermark art and make it more contemporary. Watermark woodcut art has made very gratifying achievements. This fruitful achievement is also the result of his diligence and spirituality. This fruitful achievement is also the result of his diligence and spirituality. People at home and abroad respect it as "the land of the West Lake", which is a high praise for him.

Mr. Fang Lu's watermark woodcut prints are elegant and calm, hazy and implicit, full of oriental mystery and poetic artistic conception.

-Mr. Mitchell Su Liwen, a professor at Oxford University and an oriental art historian.

Mr. Fang Lu's works are vivid and vivid with knife technique, and color and water permeate each other, forming a very interesting and subtle charm.

-Professor Zhao Yannian, a famous printmaker in China.

Mr Fang Lu observes the world and appreciates nature with the eyes of a poet. For him, the West Lake is just a carrier of aesthetic interest. His paintings are full of rich oriental colors and rich poetry, conveying his aesthetic feeling of misty rain and light haze in Jiangnan water town and praising the quiet, peaceful and peaceful life.
