Author: [Tang] Liu Changqing
Original text:
The new year will only deepen my desire? Added a lonely tear of an exile. People who are exiled in old age rush ahead of me in spring.
The monkey came down from the mountain and pestered me. I was tortured like a bodyguard, so when will this day come?
Translation:
The new year has come, and I am more homesick, and tears keep flowing in the independent horizon. In my later years, I was relegated to a lower position, and Spring Return hurried ahead of me.
The apes in the mountains are dying with me, and the willows on the river are sad with me. I had the same experience as Dr. Zhang, so when will this day end?
Creative background:
This poem was written by Liu Changqing in the New Year after he was demoted to Nanbawei. In the spring of the third year from Tang Suzong to German (758), the author was banished to Nanba of Panzhou (now Maoming City, Guangdong Province) because of Changzhou, Suzhou. According to the preface to sending Liu Shaofu to Changzhou to demote Nanba from Hongzhou, it is recorded: "The commander of the son is a country, proud of his traces, and strict in his administration, which can make the program orderly and the official unexpected." A husband's pride is meticulous, and strictness is extravagant. Therefore, his grades are not written. However, if he slanders him, his son will be branded as Bawei. (Piling Collection) It can be seen that he was convicted of libel and demoted. This poem was written the following year, after Gan Yuan moved to Panzhou in 759.
