On a sunny morning, the reporter visited the root carving artist Yang. The home of this old artist who participated in the Olympic Games, the Wenchuan earthquake relief, the 60th anniversary of the National Day, and the National Agricultural Fair, is filled with countless carved works of art on the table and behind the door, or like a beast with claws, or like a bird with wings flying, leaving thousands of landscapes "withered" with vivid images. ...

A family of wooden artists became attached to the roots of trees.

Influenced by his father since childhood, 12-year-old Yang began to try to create independently. Since then, he has been fascinated by root art, read many related books and materials, and visited and studied in other places. After more than forty years of painstaking exploration and research, he gradually formed a unique and dynamic artistic style. He has created more than 200 root carving works such as figures, animals and mountain scenery, and won more than 20 national, provincial and municipal awards.

Pursue "root flavor" and turn decay into magic

Yang's root carving is full of strong natural beauty. He paid attention to the comprehensive study of the shape, spirit, meaning and interest of root carving and carefully tried to figure it out. With his life background and understanding of artistic beauty, Yang excavated and created beauty from the root of stubbornness and decadence. Those mottled and knotted dead trees and broken roots have become lifelike works of art under his insight.

His masterpiece The Rise of the Eagle has rough lines, and the trunk of the eagle is not deliberately carved, but is made of pure natural texture, which is the only root carving art donated by our province to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee. "Call the Wind and Call the Rain" and "The Rise of the Lion" stand out among thousands of exquisite large-scale exhibits, and successively won the gold medal in the 2006 National Longevity Cup Root Art Exhibition. On the eve of National Day this year, in order to welcome the 60th birthday of New China, Yang specially made a root carving work called "Auspicious Three Treasures". This pair of warriors are made of hard thousand-year-old stumps, carved with great care, standing tall, symbolizing family harmony and good luck. From June 5438 to February this year, Yang's six works were sorted out by China Cultural Information Association, and his basic works were highly praised by people in the industry at home and abroad.

Concentrate on creation and experience the life of root carving

Behind success is often full of hardships and twists and turns. From abandoned tree roots to beautiful root carvings, it takes at least one year and goes through many procedures. In the critical period of creation, Yang often stays up all night.

The uniqueness and unrepeatability of root carving are the source of attracting Yang's creation. In order to find good raw materials, he often forgets his job. One winter, for a big tree root, he spent more than eight hours cleaning the tree root wrapped in ice soil in the biting cold wind, and the only one left on his body was soaked with sweat. When writing The Rise of the Eagle, Yang worked so hard that the button sawed off three of his fingers. A month later, before the wound healed completely, he returned to work.

Art is priceless, but family is precious.

"Some people create root carvings to get a good price, but my root carvings never sell, only collect. In my heart, these treasures are worth more than anything. " When it comes to his creation, Yang is very talkative. "Now that the material life of our people has improved, we should pursue some healthy spiritual life. I collect these things to let more people feel the charm of art. "

During the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, Yang spontaneously organized an earthquake charity sale in the "Love Disaster Area" and donated all the proceeds from the charity sale to the earthquake-stricken areas in Sichuan.

In Yang's artistic career of more than 40 years, he is not a pure root carving artist. He studied trade with his father, worked as a miner, was the head of a trade union club, and even was the chairman of the trade union of Jiangxia Food Center. No matter how his work changed, Yang never changed his ambition of root carving. Root art has become the most important part of Yang Sheng's life. One knife and one axe carved not only roots, but also life.
