Classification of ancient poetry

Ancient poetry is divided into two categories, one is ancient poetry and the other is modern poetry.

Before the formation of modern poetry, various poetry genres other than Chu Ci were also called ancient poetry and ancient style. The rhythm of ancient poetry is relatively free, informal and flat. The rhymes are broad. Except for the seven-word Bailiang style sentences that rhyme, they usually rhyme with every other sentence. The rhymes can be flat or oblique, or the rhymes can be changed. There is no limit to the length of the article. Sentences can be neatly divided into four-character, five-character, six-character, and seven-character styles, or they can be mixed with long and short sentences and varied at will, creating a mixed style.

There are many ancient poems in five characters and seven characters, which are referred to as "Five Ancient" and "Qi Ancient". Miscellaneous words range from one character to more than a cross, and are generally a mixture of three, four, five, and seven characters. Most of them are seven characters, so they are customarily classified into the Qigu category. Since the Han and Wei dynasties, Yuefu poetry has originally been in conjunction with music, including songs, lines, tunes, words, etc. People in the Tang Dynasty imitated the Yuefu poems of the previous dynasties. Some of them followed the ancient Yuefu titles, such as Li Bai's "The Road to Shu is Difficult" (sixth-grade children are ready to accept the move), while others created new titles for famous works such as Du Fu's "Three Officials" and "Three Officials". "Farewell" (we have recently been required to recite the common texts that we must remember), "Song of Thatched Cottage Broken by the Autumn Wind" that is required to be recited by the fifth grade class on Xueyuan Road, and Bai Juyi's "New Yuefu" are no longer suitable for music, and they are indeed within the scope of ancient poetry. In addition, before the Tang Dynasty, there were "quatrains" with four sentences as a unit, or "ancient quatrains". There were also authors in the Tang Dynasty. Different from the modern quatrains that pay attention to the flat and oblique lines, it is also a kind of ancient poem.

Modern poetry includes quatrains and rhymed verses.

① Quatrain:

A type of modern poetry. This name probably originated in the Southern Dynasties, and is also known as Jieju, Duanju and Jueshi. Each poem has four sentences, usually with five or seven characters. Referred to as Five Jue and Seven Jue.

For example, Su Shi's "The First Sunny and the Later Rain on the Drinking Lake" that we recently recited one-on-one to our children is a seven-character quatrain.

②Rhymed poetry:

A type of modern Chinese poetry with strict rhythm. It originated from Shen Yue's new-style poems in the Southern Dynasties that emphasized rhythm and parallelism during the Qi Yongming period. It was formally finalized during the Shen Quan period and the Song Zhiwen period in the early Tang Dynasty, and matured in the prosperous Tang Dynasty.

There are 8 lines in the rhythmic poem, which are divided into first couplet, chin couplet, neck couplet and last couplet. Rhymed poetry requires that the entire poem rhymes with one rhyme, limited to plain rhyme; the second, fourth, sixth, and eighth lines rhyme, and the first line may or may not rhyme. Usually there are five-character verses and seven-character verses.

For example, Du Fu's "Spring View" that appeared in the fifth-grade textbook is a five-character poem.
