Famous Poems of Su Shi's Father and Son

Su Shi's father and son and Su Zhe both wrote a poem "Coconut Crown", leaving a beautiful story about coconuts.

Born four years less (1097), in July, Su Dongpo and his son arrived at Changhua Military Surrender Department. It is now Danzhou. Danzhou is in Hainan, the southernmost tip of China. For the Central Plains people, this is the end of the world. A generation of great men were demoted here by the emperor's old son, and Dongpo's depression in his heart can be imagined. However, Hainan's unique scenery can still bring them some freshness, especially coconuts, which are only available in Hainan.

One day in September this year, Su Guo picked a bunch of coconuts, peeled them like locals, opened a mouth and handed them to his father. Su Dongpo looked happy. He poured out the juice, drank a bowl beautifully, and then gave the empty shell to his son. After playing for a long time, Su Guo suddenly remembered an interesting story of his father's past. As a senior official in Beijing, his father was in his prime and became a star in the whole capital. All the idols of literati, even his political opponents, often secretly admire his natural and unrestrained manner. At that time, he had a whim to transform the hat that was popular at that time and make a strange hat with a high tube and short eaves. My father wears this kind of hat on various occasions, and he doesn't want it to become popular. Literati and men of letters rushed to follow suit and became fashionable for a while, so he was called "Zi Zhan Hat".

Now I'm in the middle of nowhere, and all the conditions have reached the lowest point. When I saw my old and frail father, Su Guo tried his best to make his father feel better. Now the inspiration came, he thought, wouldn't his father be happy if he made a hat out of this coconut shell? So he began to make a strange hat, which caused everyone to watch.

Later, Su Guo made another one and sent it to his uncle Su Zhe on the other side of the strait. When Su Zhe saw this strange and novel thing, he was immediately amused and wrote a poem happily:

Qiu Lai's hair is half silk, and towels are stronger than musical instruments.

Spin the sea palm in the air, bundle up your hair and pretend to be an old mage.

The change is hard to understand, and I know it will continue.

Mao Yan Bamboo House is on the south wall, just like it is a gallery temple.

This is how Su Zhe felt when he saw a hat made of discarded goods. Influenced by his brother, Leizhou was relegated for a long time. At that time, he was demoted to Leizhou for resettlement and experienced many vicissitudes. When he saw the coconut crown related to his hair, he naturally wrote that his hair was mostly gray and sparse, so that he could hardly catch it. Now this strange hat suddenly appears, which just makes up for the embarrassment that the hair is sparse and can't be used as a musical instrument. With his hair tied up and a coconut crown, he looks like an old mage.

The phrase "I don't know how to change, but I won't know until it gets worse" is all Buddhist terms. It means that I have been exiled to the wild South China Sea and have changed secretly. Although others don't care or notice it, I know it very well. There is nothing wrong with these changes, he thought, because Buddhism says there is no difference between good and bad. Now, although I have been demoted to a barbarian land, what's so sad about it? So there are two sentences. Living in a thatched cottage at sea now is no different from being an official in the imperial court in the past.

Then Su Shi and his son sang a song.

Dongpo's poems are as follows:

Heaven teaches you to drink silk every day, and wine makes the forest wait for documents.

Self-cleaning towels invite drunken guests and even send empty shells to the crown owner.

The scale is simple, the ancients argued, and I don't know how to guide it lightly.

What's more, short eaves and high roofs, Dongpo is not outdated.

Su Guo's poems are as follows:

Yu Pei rhinoceros hairpin dark eyes silk, Huang Guanjin savage instrument.

Writing a book is not only poor, but also should meet the founder.

I got it from a relic, and the bamboo skin made it known to future generations.

I have no intention to be crowned in life, nor to fly a kite when it falls.

Su Guo saw his uncle's poems, which aroused his interest in poetry. He also started with things related to headgear. Yu Pei rhinoceros hairpin was originally a noble ornament, but now my uncle's hair is sparse and gray, and he leads an ordinary life, so he can barely pull his hair up with a towel. What was the use of those Yu Pei rhinoceros hairpins in the past? Throw it there. It's covered with cobwebs. After leaving the imperial court and being thrown into the wilderness, you can only get used to the habits of savages gradually. At that time, my son was fascinated by the Buddha and understood Laozi with the Buddha. "Being a poor writer, I should meet my ancestors" corresponds to his life in Leizhou. The necklace is made of coconut crown. Although it is very simple, it can be handed down to future generations like the bamboo hat made by Liu Bang, Emperor Gaozu. Finally, I use the topic to express my personal interest, saying that being a big official and seeking big money is not my wish in this life. Although being a great official is beautiful, the danger of dying like a kite falling into the water is also thrilling. Let's live a more peaceful life. Su Dongpo suffered from fame all his life. From middle age, he often showed the idea of pursuing a plain life in front of his children, especially in his later years. Su Guo spent the longest time with his father and was deeply influenced by his thoughts. In Hainan, he once wrote an article "Yin Zhi" to express his ambition to stay away from officialdom. The love of coconut crown in the poem is a portrayal of his mood at that time, and it can also be used as a prelude to Yin Zhi's thinking.

Su Dongpo's poems are more vivid. His consistent tone, seemingly self-deprecating and ironic, is completely integrated with nature, which is reflected in this poem. What an unfortunate blow to ordinary people, but Su Dongpo's tone felt that it was a very lucky thing. Su Dongpo said that when I came to Hainan, I could drink coconut milk, the natural wine ready-made in the forest, and even the winemaker didn't need it. Isn't this a good pleasure given by God? There are not only good wines to drink, but also hat makers. The hats made are simple and lovely. The locals have been drinking coconut all their lives, but they never thought that coconut shells could be used as hats. Mr. Su suddenly put a coconut crown on his head, and everyone watched curiously. Su Dongpo is proud. He must be thinking, Guo Er is really my son. Finally, Dongpo also thought of "Zi Zhan Mao" and said with a smile, what's wrong with Su Dongpo?
