Poems about Peng Dehuai

There are two versions of Mao Zedong's six-character poem praising Peng Dehuai. One is included in the Collection of Mao Zedong's Poems, which has been circulating in the military for a long time, and the other is written by Peng Dehuai from memory in a letter to Mao Zedong in 1962.

Six-character Poems for Comrade Peng Dehuai, which is included in the Collection of Mao Zedong's Poems, is a long-standing and influential version in the military. Its poem says:

The mountain is high and the road is far and the pit is deep, and the army is galloping vertically and horizontally.

who dares to cross the knife at once? Only me, General Peng!

The version recalled in Peng Dehuai's Self-Report is quite different from the versions in Selected Poems of Mao Zedong and later published Poems of Mao Zedong:

The mountain is high and the road is dangerous and the ditch is deep, so the cavalry can do whatever you want.

who dares to rein in the horse? Only I, General Peng!
