In the Song Dynasty, Su Dongpo, a layman, worked in Guazhou, Jiangbei, just across the river from Jinshan Temple in Jiangnan. He and Zen master Fo Yin, the abbot of Jinshan Temple, often talk about Zen. One day, he consciously practiced, wrote a poem, sent buddhist nun across the river, and gave it to Zen master Fo Yin for confirmation.
On the first day, the sky was clear.
Eight winds can't move, sitting on the purple lotus.
(Note: Eight winds refer to the eight realms we encounter in life, such as "weighing, mocking, destroying, fame, profit, decline, bitterness and joy", which can affect people's emotions, so they are described as winds. )
After Jackson took it from buddhist nun, he took a pen and approved two words for buddhist nun to take back. Su Dongpo thought that the Zen master would appreciate his meditation, so he quickly opened the Zen master's instructions. When he saw the word "fart" written on it, he couldn't help but get angry, so he crossed the river by boat to find the theory of Zen master.
When the ship approached Jinshan Temple, Zen Master Fo Yin was standing by the river waiting for Su Dongpo. Su Dongpo met the Zen master and said angrily, "Zen master! We are best friends. If you don't appreciate my poetry and my practice, how can you curse? "
The Zen master casually said, "What are you cursing?"
Su Dongpo showed the Zen master the word "fart" recognized in the poem.
The Zen master smiled and said, "Oh! Didn't you say that "eight winds can't blow" how can you "cross the river with a fart?"
Su Dongpo is ashamed.
It's not what you say, but what you do.
