Tiananmen Square is located in the center of Beijing, the capital of People's Republic of China (PRC), at the southern end of the Forbidden City, facing Tiananmen Square, the Monument to the People's Heroes, the Great Hall of the People, the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall and the National Museum of China across Chang 'an Avenue.
Tiananmen Square covers an area of about 4,800 square meters and attracts worldwide attention for its outstanding architectural art and special political status.
Tiananmen Square was originally named Chengtianmen, which means "blessed by heaven and ordered by heaven". In the eighth year of Qing Shunzhi (165 1), it was officially renamed Tiananmen Square.
