From the second chapter of The Analects of Confucius, a disciple of Confucius in the Spring and Autumn Period.
Original text: Confucius said, "There are 300 poems. In a word, it says,' Thinking is innocent'."
Confucius said: "The profound meaning of the 300 articles in The Book of Songs can be summarized in one sentence, which is' pure thinking'."
The word "thinking innocently" originated from The Book of Songs and was originally used to describe Lu Xigong's groom's devotion to raising horses. Confucius used it to comment on The Book of Songs.
Confucius believes that the Book of Songs has 300 articles, which are healthy in content, pure in thought, in line with etiquette and justice, and in line with Confucian political and moral standards. This evaluation of Confucius reflects Confucius' thought of attaching importance to the social function of The Book of Songs and demanding that poetry be beneficial to people's moral education.

The Analects of Confucius was written in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, and was recorded by Confucius' students and their retranslators. By the Han Dynasty, there were three editions of The Analects of Confucius (20), The Analects of Confucius (22) and The Analects of Classical Chinese (2 1). At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Zheng Xuan compiled and annotated a new book based on The Analects of Lu with reference to The Analects of Qi and The Analects of Ancient Chinese.
After Zheng Xuan's annotations were circulated, The Analects of Confucius and The Analects of China Ancient Literature gradually disappeared. The later editions of The Analects of Confucius mainly include: The Analects of Confucius by Wei in the Three Kingdoms Period, On Shu Shu by Liang Huang Kan in the Southern and Northern Dynasties, The Analects of Confucius by Zhu, The Analects of Confucius by Liu Baonan in the Qing Dynasty, etc.
The Analects of Confucius covers many aspects such as philosophy, politics, economy, education, literature and art, and is the most important classic of Confucianism. In terms of expression, The Analects of Confucius is a model for recording prose, with concise language and vivid images. In terms of arrangement, The Analects has no strict compiling style, each article is a chapter, and each chapter is a chapter. Articles and chapters are not closely related, but are roughly classified and repeated chapters appear.
The Analects of Confucius has been regarded as "the rule of the Five Classics, the throat of the Six Arts" since Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty "ousted a hundred schools of thought and respected Confucianism alone", and it is the first-hand material for studying Confucius and Confucianism, especially primitive Confucianism.
In the Southern Song Dynasty, Zhu combined Daxue, The Doctrine of the Mean, The Analects of Confucius and Mencius into four books, which made his position in Confucian classics improve day by day. During the life extension period of the Yuan Dynasty, the imperial examination began to select scholars with the "four books". From then on, until the Westernization Movement in the late Qing Dynasty, the imperial examination was abolished, and The Analects of Confucius has always been the golden rule pursued by scholars.
