The main reason why Laoshan Mountain is so highly respected is that it is a sacred place for Taoism and Buddhism because of its incomparably heavy human history. Since the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, alchemists have lived in seclusion in Laoshan Mountain. Taoism in Laoshan Mountain began to rise in the Tang and Song Dynasties and reached its peak in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties. There are still Taoist temples in Laoshan Mountain, such as Taiqing Palace, Shangqing Palace, Mingxia Cave, Hualou Palace, Zhu Wei Temple, Taiping Palace, Tong Zhen Palace, Baiyun Cave, Guandi Temple, Baifu Temple, Ming Dow Temple, Grand Old Temple and Hall of Supreme Harmony.
As for Buddhism, it was first introduced into Laoshan area from the Western Jin Dynasty, reached its peak in Sui and Tang Dynasties, and gradually weakened in Qing Dynasty. There are 32 Buddhist temples in Laoshan Mountain, of which 6 were built before Sui Dynasty, 4 in Tang Dynasty, 1 in Song Dynasty, 16 in Ming Dynasty and 5 in Qing Dynasty. There are many Buddhist festivals in Laoshan Mountain, including commemorative activities, abstinence activities, transcendence activities and folk activities. The main festivals of Buddhist temples in Laoshan area are Buddha's Birthday, Guanyin Birthday and Orchid Club.
