Aiwan Pavilion is one of the four famous pavilions in China. It is located in Qingfeng Gorge at the foot of Yuelu Mountain in Hunan Province. The pavilion was built during the Qianlong period by Luo Dian, the then dean of Yuelu Academy. Its original name is "Red Leaf Pavilion". It was also called "Ai Feng Pavilion" and later changed to "Ai Wan Pavilion". Together with Pipa Pavilion, Orchid Pavilion and Drunkard Pavilion, it is also known as the four famous pavilions in China. It is a resort for revolutionary activities and a provincial cultural relic protection unit. The shape of the pavilion is double eaves and eight columns, with glazed green tiles and flying corners. From a distance, it looks like it is about to fly in the sky. The interior is made of red lacquered garden columns, the four stone columns on the outer eaves are made of granite, the pavilion is painted with caissons, and the red-bottomed gilt "Love Evening Pavilion" hangs from the pavilion lattice on the east and west sides. It was written by Li Da, the president of Hunan University at the time, in a special letter to the chairman. Made with handwriting.
The origin of the name Aiwan Pavilion
One theory is that it was changed by the poet Yuan Mei. He thought the names "Red Leaf" and "Ai Feng" were too tacky.
The origin of the name Ai Wan Pavilion 2
According to Du Mu's "Mountain Travel": "The stone path on the cold mountain in the distance is slanted. There are people deep in the white clouds. Stop and sit in the Ai Maple Forest at night, the frost leaves are red "Flowers in February" was changed to "Love Late". Although the pavilion is so famous, the location where it is located is not spacious at all. There were many tourists that day, making it even more cramped. Looking from the outside of the pavilion, it may be due to the recent development of the city that there is no beautiful scenery, which makes me feel disappointed.
The name of Aiwan Pavilion has three origins
Once, a ragged young man went to Yuelu Academy to ask for an audience with Luo Dian, the dean of the academy (Qianlong period). Probably because he was busy, the person who asked to see him seemed to be just a poor and unknown scholar, so Luo Dian did not meet him. The scholar ran to the Hongye Pavilion on the mountain behind the academy and inscribed Du Mu's Qijue "Mountain Journey" on it, but there were two words missing. The third sentence "stop and sit in the maple forest to love the evening" is written as "stop the car and sit in the maple forest", missing the words "love" and "late". The gardener told Luo Dian what had happened and ridiculed the poor scholar for even reciting a famous poem by Du Mu incorrectly.
When Luo Dian heard this, he couldn't help but secretly screamed with shame. I knew that the scholar had left a poem to satirize him. The omission of the words "love" and "late" is a mockery of him as the dean of the academy, who is supposed to care for and support the younger students, but yet he rejects them thousands of miles away. He really does not know how to love and educate the younger generation, and does not "love late". He sent people around to look for the scholar and prepared to apologize to him in person, but the scholar had disappeared without a trace and could not be found. Luo Dian renamed the pavilion "Ai Wan" as a warning to himself, and also to remind the later deans of Yuelu and those engaged in education.
