Customs of adding children
Explanation of "Cihai": Ding, population, men are called Ding and women are called mouths. With a southern accent, Deng is a homophone for Ding. It has been given richer connotations, firstly, it represents the development of light; secondly, the light contains the meaning of endless life and the passing of fire from generation to generation; thirdly, the lamp has become a symbol of human beings.
Shang Ding obviously means to add children. Therefore, in the traditional clan society in the south, every time a boy is born, a lamp-lighting ceremony is held, that is, offering sacrifices to the ancestors and reporting the addition of a new child to the family, and praying to the ancestors to protect the healthy growth of the child. Lighting is also called raising lights or chandeliers in some places.
