Introduction to Shutang Stone

In Wengyuan County in northern Guangdong, there is a cultural site of the Tang Dynasty that the people of Wengyuan are proud of - Shutang Stone. The stone library is built on a small island in the center of the Wengjiang River in Sanhua Town. Its shape resembles a ship sailing upstream in the rapids. The rock formations on the island are overlapping and the rocks are steep. The stone chamber of the library leans against the rocks and has rock walls that are crisscrossed and integrated into one. Although the walls are now broken, its structure is unique, simple, natural and stands proudly. It is a wonder that often attracts passing tourists to stop, watch and take photos. The Shutang Stone makes Wengyuan people proud not only because of its long history and beautiful scenery, but also because it is the place where Shao Ye, a famous figure in Wengyuan, studied in the late Tang Dynasty.

Shao Ye was a Hakka poet of the realist poetic school in the late Tang Dynasty. He created a large number of poems in his life, and ten volumes of poems do not exist today. Only "Complete Poems of the Tang Dynasty" contains thirty-three chapters in one volume. Because he lived in Chang'an for a long time and was famous for his poetry, he was known as "one of the five talented scholars in Lingnan".

Personal background

Shao Ye was born poor but had great ambitions since he was a child. He said: "The husband's ambition is not great, so how can he support the world? Revenge does not require a sword to assist the eye and does not require soldiers." He hoped to use his talents and learning to serve the court and realize his political ambition of "May the king be like Yao and Shun to make the world peaceful."

According to the "Shaozhou Prefecture Chronicle" of the Qing Dynasty and the "Wengyuan County Chronicle" of the Jiaqing Edition of the Qing Dynasty, Shao Ye was a county official when he was young. one day. The county magistrate had a private visitor and repeatedly ordered Shao to make a bed to entertain the guests. Shao thought that the county magistrate was trying to be disrespectful and he should never obey. He said, "Am I the one who makes the bed for you? How can a man be your slave?" After hearing this, the county magistrate said He got angry and cursed: "The attendants of *** are so bold to kidnap Shao Ye out of the county government office!" Then the messengers dragged Shao Ye out of the county government office. Shao Ye was so angry that he cut off his hair with a knife and hung it on the door. He swore: "You can't be like this if you're a scholar!" Then he raised his arms and left.

Study hard

After leaving the county government, Shao Ye went upstream to the center of Luojiang River (now Wengjiang River) ten miles away from the county seat - the Zhumachong Rapids and built on the rocks. Book hall. From then on, Shao studied hard day and night. His hair was messy and he didn't bother to comb it. The villagers laughed at him for being stupid, but he didn't take it seriously. He just tied his hair and studied hard.

Hard work pays off. A few years later, he was well versed in classics and history, and he was well versed in Yuefu and was especially proficient in ancient music. In the eighth year of Xiantong (AD 866), he was recommended to study at the Imperial College, the highest institution in the capital, and became an Imperial College student. During his stay in the capital, Shao spent the most enjoyable time in his life either studying hard and practicing hard; gathering friends and scholars to recite poems and writing poems; or talking about the past and present and ridiculing current ills.

Being an upright official

Shao Ye studied in the Imperial College for a long time, and his friends were both celebrities. However, because of his uprightness, he wrote poems and compositions that criticized current affairs and could not be reused by those in power. For example, one of the poems "On Politics" has verses such as "Domestic affairs are handled by the feudal lords; foreign affairs are governed by the princes; if the princes govern themselves, they can cultivate themselves; if there is no place for one thing, the hills will be filled with ants' nests"; another poem, "Sui Feng", says: " The emperor is worried that the poor will have no food and will not be able to grow crops. The rich will lose their livelihood and provide food for the rich. Heaven and earth will not be kind to the strong. "Just like the Jiajing Dynasty in the Ming Dynasty. Huang Zuo, a scholar of the Hanlin Academy, said that Shao Ye's "poems are prickly about current affairs" and "his words are sudden and harsh". He dared to criticize the rulers and the exploiting class. Therefore, he studied poetry and books diligently and wrote poems that were "splendid and brilliant" and "cannot compete with the first class". .

I don’t know how many years have passed. Wen Tingyun (a famous poet in the late Tang Dynasty), an assistant professor at the Imperial Academy, admired Shao Ye’s talents and sympathized with his repeated frustrations, so he compiled Shao’s poems "Sui Feng" and "Spring Day". Dozens of articles such as "A Feeling" and "Han Nu Xing" were praised in order to promote justice, which made Shao Ye ascend to the rank of Jinshi. Introduction

Shao is a county official. When a guest arrived unexpectedly, he was angry and did not roll out his bed to greet him, so he drove him away. Ye then cut off her hair and hung it on the county gate, and studied hard. He lives in seclusion in a lake more than ten miles away from the county, surrounded by water. In ordinary life, there is no crown in the house, and the hair is worn in the wild. Then he worked on poetry. Tired of taking the exam, at the age of thirty, I still didn't get the first place. In the seventh year of Xiantong (866 AD), he went to the capital and was born as a son of the country. At that time, Wen Tingyun was in charge of the examination. He was very sympathetic to the cold and suffering, so he wrote 30 poems in honor of him, which were widely praised. After being released from prison, he went to the official position, but he didn't know where he ended up. Ye authored a volume of poetry, "The Biography of Talented Scholars of the Tang Dynasty" which has been handed down to the world.

Shao Ye’s poems and essays travel thousands of miles away in dreams, with flesh and blood visible to his eyes. I feel more and more melancholy, and I don't believe that Chang'an is far away. Everyone is a farmer, but I am the only one who often encounters droughts. Bad life is like a leak, dripping with dissatisfaction. When the wild geese come at the end of the day, they scream and feel heartbroken. ——Shao ??Ye, Tang Dynasty, "Autumn Evening"

Autumn Evening Returning from thousands of miles away, I can only see my flesh and blood. I feel more and more melancholy, and I don't believe that Chang'an is far away.

Everyone is a farmer, but I am the only one who often encounters droughts. Bad life is like a leak, dripping with dissatisfaction.

When the geese come at the end of the day, their hearts are broken when they scream. The spring sun shines on Jiuqu. The spring breeze is charming and beautiful. Wan Qi went out of the capital and was surrounded by the fragrance. Don't hang around withered bones, it will last for thousands of years. I know that my body today is not the ghost of the past. But when you look at the plains, you can see people being destroyed and killed. ——"Cold Food in Chang'an" by Shao Ye of the Tang Dynasty

Cold Food in Chang'an The spring sun shines on Jiuqu. The spring breeze is charming and beautiful.

Ten thousand people came out of the capital and were surrounded by the fragrance.

Don’t hang around withered bones, it will last for thousands of years.

I know that the person I am today is not the ghost of the past.

But if you look at the flat land, you will also see people being crushed to death. During the Cold Food Festival, it is ironic to go on an outing and play the guqin over wine, making new sounds in the strings. The new sound is indistinguishable, and the fingers are full of resentment. My concubine does not protect herself, and the four seasons are like wheels. I don’t know how long the moon has illuminated tonight. The dew drops are filled with the fragrance of hibiscus, and the fragrance is sold out and the heart dies. There is nothing left in the good times, but the remaining red water is withered. ——Tang Dynasty·Shao Ye's "Ancient Yuefu"

Ancient Yuefu When playing the guqin over wine, new sounds are produced in the strings. The new sound is indistinguishable, and the fingers are full of resentment.

My concubine is not able to protect herself, and the four seasons are like wheels. I don’t know how long the moon has illuminated tonight.

The dew drops smell like hibiscus, and the fragrance is sold out and the heart dies. There is nothing left in the good times, but the remaining red water is withered.
