I say chrysanthemum, the flower that represents seclusion; peony, the flower that represents wealth; lotus, the flower that represents the gentleman. Alas! Nostalgia A Chinese teacher

文/Cong Weixi

For many years, I have never forgotten my first literary teacher. It was 1948 when I was in the second grade of junior high school at Tongshi Affiliated High School. After the school started, a new teacher who was very popular came into our Chinese class. After he said hello to his classmates, his opening remarks shocked all the students. He said that there are "three peaks" in the Chinese literary world, and then wrote the names of these "three peaks" on the blackboard: Hu Feng, Xuefeng, and Tian Xiufeng. When the students were puzzled, he told them bluntly: "You must have heard of the names of Hu Feng and Feng Xuefeng - I am Tian Xiufeng who followed them." I understood that he meant "Feng" ” is a homophone for “wind”, introducing himself humorously.

This is the first time in my student career that I have encountered a teacher who shows off his personality so openly. But it was this informal teacher who gave me the spark of literature and allowed me to embark on the path of literature without hesitation. I remember that this teacher Tian Xiufeng never gave us any questions in the composition class, but allowed us to freely propose topics. His theoretical basis is: students come from different fields of life and have different personalities. They all write under the same proposition, making it difficult to discover talents. The whole class was full of curiosity about this teacher. Some people said that he was trying to be new and different, while other classmates used the homophony of "peak" and "wind" to call "my teacher" "Wizard" - giving him the nickname "Wizard". The implication is that Teacher Tian Xiufeng has departed from the routine of Chinese teaching.

At that time, the language was generally called Guowen. Although the students no longer wear long robes and mandarin jackets, their minds are still absolutely closed. In my heart, I admired this teacher very much, especially that day when I discovered on his bookshelf that a book titled "A String of Rosary Beads" had Tian Xiufeng's name printed on the cover. For me, the shock caused by this discovery was no different than a thunder, because in my student days, this was the first time I saw a Chinese teacher with a personal book published. Although the book was small and the pages were not too thick, it still aroused my admiration for this teacher.

What happened next was even more unexpected. During the composition class, he excitedly read my submitted essay aloud in front of the whole class. I remember that the essay was titled "Green Riverside" and it recorded the interesting story of several of our classmates going to play in the water at a pond called Xiaozha outside the west gate of Tong County on Sunday. One of the classmates, named Chen Jingwen, who lives in Baiyangdian, is a superman in the water. He is like a dragon in the water and leaves all the students participating in the swimming competition far behind. In the article, I praised him as "Zhang Shun" in "Water Margin". What's even more interesting is that when Teacher Tian was reading my composition, he completely lost his dignity as a teacher. He would shake his head for a while, then stop and meditate; he was like a big naughty boy playing with the whole class. This move immediately shortened the distance between me and my classmates. Some of them laughed and some shouted - only my heartbeat was beating like a drum, because at this moment, the eyes of my classmates were all turned to me - from then on From elementary school to junior high school, although my composition class was praised by the teacher, it was not read aloud by the teacher. Many years later, I felt that from that moment on, my lifelong literary career had been determined, because my literary potential was activated by Teacher Tian at this moment and was recognized by him.

The second unforgettable thing still stems from the composition. Once when I was writing a free essay, I wrote an essay titled "When the Peach Blossoms Bloom". The article narrates the sad memories of my childhood, when I and my friends from the mountain village built stone towers in the peach blossom jungle all over the mountain: a childhood friend nicknamed "Little Pony" was the leader among us. He not only had extraordinary arm strength, , there was also a record of riding a horse without a saddle, galloping through the Beishan Mountains in my hometown, and going to a village behind the mountains to watch a shadow puppet show. But when we built stone towers with stones, tragedy befell him - he developed a boil on his neck, and he died within three days. After he left, this small mountain village lost its tranquility. Some villagers said: He should not build a tower on the top of the mountain and let the mountain god carry it on his back. The mountain god was angry... Some villagers said: The stone tower happened to be facing his house, which offended the underground gods, and the yin energy was Entering his home along the underground central axis... I am young and don't have so many superstitious legends in my heart. But when I look at the mountain of peach blossoms, I feel that those gorgeous petals are soaked in blood... The reason why I wrote this This essay was written entirely because the peach blossoms blooming in the courtyard of the Tongshi Affiliated Middle School brought back memories of my childhood.

After Teacher Tian Xiufeng read my essay, he did not read it through in class like last time. Instead, he took my essay to find my uncle from Mainland China. My uncle graduated from the Chinese Language Department of Fu Jen Catholic University in Peking. He once published a poem imitating Shakespeare's sonnet style in the supplement of Tianjin's "Ta Kung Pao" edited by Feng Zhi at that time. At this time, my uncle served as the dean of the Tongshi University. .

That day, my uncle called me to his office, took out the composition I wrote from the drawer, and asked me:

"Did you really write this?"

I replied: "Uncle, you should know about this person in our village, 'Little Ma Juzi'!"

"Is he really dead?"

"Suffering from boils Dead!"

My uncle told me: "This essay was sent by Teacher Tian. He recognized that you contain literary cells that are waiting to be developed. After reading your essay, I also agreed. His opinion. You should ask Teacher Tian for advice in the future. He is a knowledgeable Chinese teacher." From then on, Teacher Tian Xiufeng's dormitory became a place where I often go. He banged his fist on the wooden table while motivating me to read more, write more and submit more. He said that although he was not a fortune teller, he could have a glimpse of my future, which might be a life associated with literature. Although this teacher is difficult to compare with Hu Feng and Xuefeng, his no-taboos and consistent character still sowed the seeds of writing and the compass of life in me when I was young. Unfortunately, he only taught our Chinese language class for one year before he was transferred to Tianjin to teach. A year later, I also came to Beijing Normal School to study, and two years later, in 1951, I published my first novel in a newspaper. Therefore, I have always kept in mind the initial salary increase that this teacher gave me to fuel my literary career.

Quite coincidentally, in the 1990s of the last century, I once mentioned this past event in an interview with a newspaper reporter. Unexpectedly, this reporter's report was seen by someone who knew Teacher Tian Xiufeng and forwarded the newspaper to Teacher Tian. He wrote me a long letter through the newspaper. In addition to telling me about his farewell relationship, he also asked me in the letter with the humor he used when he was a teacher in his youth: "Can I be considered a contemporary Bole who can recognize a thousand-mile horse?" ?” I wrote back to Tianjin University of Finance and Economics where he teaches: “Teacher Tian, ??you are an outstanding teacher. All good teachers are Bole who know horses; but in my eyes, you are the Bole among Bole. So, because I am not a thousand-mile horse, but a stupid horse that can only pull a cart, doesn’t it take more energy and wisdom for you to train a stupid horse into a galloping horse?!" < /p>

On the occasion of Teacher’s Day, I write this article to express my sincere gratitude to the teacher who gave me the start of my literary career. In addition to imparting rich knowledge, an excellent teacher also has an important vocation, which is to be good at discovering the qualities and potential of students.
