Commemorate the birthday anniversary of Mr. Cheng Yuqi.

Jing Cairui

(Department of Geography, Huazhong Normal University)

I

Mr. Cheng Yuqi and Mr. Xia Xiangrong were classmates of the former Department of Geology of Tsinghua University. Mr. Cheng graduated in 1933 and Mr. Xia graduated in 1934, both of whom obtained bachelor's degrees in geography. Because from 1954 to 1956, I studied physical geography with Soviet experts in the research department of East China Normal University in Shanghai, and went to Lushan Mountain for a field scientific investigation, and wrote an article on "Discussion on the Ice Erosion Terrain of Lushan Mountain" and sent it to the editorial department of geological review. At that time, Mr. Xia Xiangrong was the editorial director of geological review. After review, it was published in geological review, vol. 18, No.3, 1958, pp. 214-214. In the summer of 1958, I was transferred from the Department of Geography of Tianjin Normal University to the Department of Geography of Central China Normal University to teach. Mr. Xia Xiangrong was transferred to Hubei Geological Bureau as the chief engineer, and later was elected as the chairman of Hubei Geological Society. I was also elected as the vice chairman and chairman of Hubei Geological Society, and was also elected as the director and executive director of Hubei Geological Society. Under the leadership of Mr. Xia Xiangrong, I worked together. After a long time, I often come and go, and I am familiar with it. He often tells me some past events of geological circles and geological societies. In 1981, with the approval of Hubei Provincial Party Committee and Hubei Science and Technology Association, we established the Li Siguang Research Association of Hubei Province. Mr. Xia Xiangrong was elected as the executive director, and I was in charge of the work of the Secretary-General. From then on, I have more opportunities to get close and become more familiar. In an academic seminar of the annual meeting of the Geological Society of Hubei Province, I submitted an article to discuss that the Quaternary glaciers in eastern China belong to marine glaciers and their physical properties are different from those in continental glacier, a mountain in western China, which was affirmed by Chairman Xia Xiangrong. By the way, he told me that the article "Discussion on the Ice Erosion Terrain of Lushan Mountain" I published in geological review was handled when he was the editorial director of geological review. Of course, I am not only very happy, but also have more respect for Mr. Xia Xiangrong. The more academic exchanges, the deeper my thoughts and feelings. My work unit is Huazhong Normal University in Wuchang, and Hubei Geological Bureau is in Hankou, separated by the Yangtze River. I sometimes go to Hankou for business, but I can't get back to Wuchang at noon. Mr. Xia Xiangrong asked me to have dinner at his house, and I was concerned about it both academically and in my life, which made me grateful and long remembered.

I remember that on August 31st, 1982, geological society of china held the 6th anniversary celebration meeting in Beidaihe, Hebei Province. Mr. Xia Xiangrong and I were invited to attend at the same time. He represented the Geological Society of Hubei Province and I represented the Li Siguang Research Society of Hubei Province. At that time, Mr. Cheng Yuqi, as the vice chairman of geological society of china, made an opening speech, and he was destined to listen to his cordial remarks with his own ears. During the meeting, Mr. Xia Xiangrong took me to meet Mr. Cheng Yuqi with concern, and introduced me and the Li Siguang Research Association of Hubei Province to Mr. Cheng Yuqi in detail. I also told Mr. Cheng Yuqi realistically: I have long admired your name. Mr. Cheng is a well-known geological scientist in China and a colleague of Mr. Li Siguang. At the suggestion of Mr. Xu Jie, former vice minister of the Ministry of Geology and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, to the Hubei Provincial Party Committee, in 1981, the Li Siguang Research Society of Hubei Province was established. The chairman is Mr. Liu Ruozeng, president of Central China Normal University, and Mr. Xia Xiangrong is the executive director. As the secretary-general, I am responsible for the daily work and affiliated to Central China Normal University. I sincerely hope that Mr. Cheng will give more support and care in the future, and * * * will work with four pioneers, Zhang (Hongzhao), Ding (Wenjiang), Weng (Wenhao) and Li (Siguang), to develop the geological science in China. Mr. Cheng is affable, polite and concerned, saying, "Li Siguang is one of the pioneers in initiating and developing China's geological science and geological cause. I went to England from 1935 to 1938 through the Chinese-English Geng public examination, or accepted Mr. Li Siguang's suggestion to study at the University of Liverpool, focusing on metamorphic petrology, and graduated in 1938 with a doctorate in philosophy. Of course, I will support and care about the work of your Li Siguang Research Association. If you have any requirements in the future, please come forward and study them together to solve them. " At that time, Mr. Cheng Yuqi had just been transferred from the vice minister of the Ministry of Geology to the chief engineer of the Ministry of Geology, responsible for all the geological business and technical work of the Ministry of Geology. When talking about Mr. Xie Jiarong's situation, Mr. Cheng said that the Ministry of Geology did not set up the post of chief engineer. At that time, Mr. Xie Jiarong served as the chief engineer of the Department of Geology and Mineral Resources of the Ministry of Geology, and later he was appointed as the deputy director of the Institute of Geology of the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Ministry of Geology. He made many contributions to the cause of geology and mineral resources in China. Although he was later in a hostile environment (wrongly classified as "Rightists"), he still worked diligently and dutifully, which was very rare. Mr. Xia Xiangrong changed the subject, and went on to add that since Mr. Li Siguang was from Huanggang, Hubei Province, the conditions for setting up the Li Siguang Research Institute in Beijing were not yet ripe, so Mr. Xu Jie suggested setting up the Li Siguang Research Institute in Li Siguang's hometown, Hubei Province, but the strength of studying Li Siguang in Hubei Province was weak and needed the support and care of the Beijing Geological Department and its subordinate units. Mr. Cheng nodded in agreement.

As the saying goes, a good beginning is half the battle. And this good start depends entirely on Mr. Xia Xiangrong's introduction, which is indispensable. Therefore, in the early 199s, when we were commissioned by Li Siguang's daughter, Academician Li Lin, and his son-in-law Academician Zou Chenglu in writing to prepare for the publication of The Complete Works of Li Siguang, we formed an editorial committee to study with them. In order to do a good job in this event, we decided to invite Mr. Cheng Yuqi and other old experts as scientific consultants and issue letters of appointment to the experts, and soon got written consent from Mr. Cheng Yuqi and others. In face-to-face consultation, Mr. Cheng said that Mr. Li Siguang's works are many, both in Chinese and English. In order to maintain its original appearance at that time, it is best to record the original text without making major changes. You don't need to explain those in English that have not been translated into Chinese. For one thing, it is too much work, and for another, it is easy to get out of shape if the translation is not good. We accept all these valuable suggestions and act accordingly. After the first draft of the preface was written by Jing Cairui, the editor-in-chief, it was studied by the editorial board several times and revised repeatedly. It was printed into a book and sent to each scientific consultant for comments. Soon, it was revised by many scientific consultants. Among them, Mr. Cheng Yuqi's revised draft was the most detailed, and even the punctuation was revised correctly. We were very concerned and meticulous. We were very grateful. The preface of The Complete Works of Li Siguang is actually the collective creation of editorial board members and scientific consultants. After The Complete Works of Li Siguang was successfully published, a symposium on the publication of The Complete Works of Li Siguang was held in Hubei Hall of the Great Hall of the People on January 23rd, 1997. Li Ruihuan, Wen Jiabao and dozens of academicians attended. Wen Jiabao spoke highly of Li Siguang's contribution and the publication of Complete Works of Li Siguang.

I remember that in 1985, when I was invited to attend the first international conference on geomorphology in Manchester University, England, I visited the University of Liverpool. I learned that Mr. Cheng Yuqi had obtained a doctorate in philosophy from the University, and that due to Mr. Cheng's outstanding contribution to geological science, the University would grant Mr. Cheng an honorary doctorate in science. Sure enough, in 1988, Mr. Cheng was invited to England to accept the honorary doctorate in science awarded by the University of Liverpool, and made an investigation visit.

In p>1989, the geological community of China sent a delegation to Washington, D.C., to attend the 28th International Geological Congress, with Mr. Cheng Yuqi as the head. As a member approved by the Ministry of Education, I was attended by the head of Cheng Yuqi and many old experts during my stay in the United States. In that year, Mr. Cheng began to serve as the deputy director of the Li Siguang Geological Science Award Committee, and concurrently served as the head of the geological research evaluation team, director of the Tan Kah Kee Foundation, editor-in-chief of the 1: 5 million geological map of China and editor-in-chief of the Introduction to Regional Geology of China. Work responsibilities are becoming more and more important.

In order to encourage geologists to make more contributions to the construction of the motherland, the "Li Siguang Geological Science Award" is specially established for the national geological industry. Among them, the special prize is specially awarded to geologists who have made special contributions to the geological work in China. In 1995, Li Siguang Geological Science Prize Committee decided to award Cheng Yuqi (Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences) and Wang Hongzhen (China Geo University) special prizes for Li Siguang Geological Science Prize.

Because of Mr. Cheng Yuqi's contribution to geological science, he was elected as a member of the first China Academy of Sciences (Department of Biology and Geology) in 1955. Later, in the 198s, he served as the deputy director of the Department of Geology of China Academy of Sciences, a member of the National Invention Award and Natural Science Award Committee, and a member of the the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, and was responsible for the work of the geoscience team.

the paper is short and the words are long, but it doesn't convey the meaning. In addition, due to the limitation of my knowledge, there is a leak. In fact, under the guidance of Cheng Yuqi's geological practice at home and abroad in his youth, teachers such as Xie Jiarong, Reed and predecessors such as Li Siguang, he deeply realized that the field is a geological science laboratory provided by nature, and the field geological investigation and research is the foundation of geological work, but it must be closely combined with necessary indoor experimental tests and comprehensive research to achieve fruitful results. This is the guide he advocated and practiced for a long time, and it is also the core of his guiding ideology for cultivating graduate students. Until August, 1989, he went to the field to personally guide the practice of doctoral students, regardless of his advanced age over seventy years of age. He often said, "If I can't personally go up the mountain to guide the postgraduate work, I won't take the postgraduate anymore, otherwise, I'm afraid it will affect the academic quality of cultivating postgraduate students." A high degree of responsibility is beyond words.

Therefore, Mr. Cheng Yuqi, as an outstanding geological scientist, put forward and developed the theory of "metallogenic series", attached importance to the analysis of geological environment and temporal and spatial evolution of deposit formation, and further improved the concept and theory of metallogenic series, with special emphasis on the comprehensive analysis and research of the geotectonic background, rock mass types, nature and occurrence of iron ore deposits and the rock properties of surrounding rocks. He is also a popular academic leader and a patriot who is very concerned about the country's political future. He has served as a director, executive director, vice-chairman and chairman of geological society of china, and has also been elected as a representative and member of the second, third and fifth national congresses of the China Association for Science and Technology. He has also served as a member of the fourth and fifth National Committees of the China People's Political Consultative Conference and a member of the Standing Committee of the sixth and seventh CPPCC (which belongs to ministerial treatment). But he is approachable, strict with himself, tolerant of others, and good at uniting comrades with different opinions to work together. Respect practice, be brave in pioneering, be good at academic research, adhere to the integration of theory with practice, adhere to the combination of scientific research and production practice, combine indoor work with field work, combine macro and micro, and combine points with faces, and always adhere to what the country needs, setting an example for future generations to learn.
