Spring Hope

Author: Du Fu

The country is broken by mountains and rivers, and the city is full of spring vegetation.

I am moved to tears by the flowers, and the birds are frightened by the hatred.

The war rages on for three months, and a letter from home is worth ten thousand gold.

The white-headed scratches are shorter, and the lust is overwhelming.

In Chang'an, which was occupied by the rebels, the poet saw that the mountains and rivers remained unchanged but the country was destroyed and the family was destroyed, and the spring came back to the earth but the city was desolate. He couldn't help but feel emotional about the scene and expressed deep emotion and sadness. The first two sentences focus on the big picture and are tragic; the second two sentences focus on the small details, saying that you shed tears when you see the flowers blooming and are startled when you hear the birds singing. Shen Deqian noticed that these two lines of poems are written in a contrasting way, "everywhere is sad" ("Tang Shi Bie Cai"). Five or six sentences describe the worries about the country and the family, and seven or eight sentences describe the deep sorrow. The whole poem is full of scenes and scenes, and the feelings of concern for country and home are deeply touching. Especially the fifth and sixth lines, because they express a common spiritual phenomenon in human life, they have become famous lines that are widely recited. Sima Guang once advocated writing poetry that "means something beyond the words and makes people think about it". He said that "the most beautiful poet in modern times is Zimei", and cited this poem as an example (see "Wen Gongxu's Poetry Talk"). Another "Tang Poetry Classification Ruler" says: "Zimei's poem is full of deep thoughts and emotions.
