This poem comes from the poem "Remembering the Shandong Brothers on September 9th" by Wang Wei of the Tang Dynasty/
Original poem:
Being alone in a foreign land is a stranger Guests, I miss my loved ones even more during the festive season.
I know from afar that my brothers have climbed to a high place, and there is one less person planting dogwood trees everywhere.
Translation:
Being far away from home alone is inevitably a bit desolate. Every Double Ninth Festival, I miss my relatives far away even more. When I think of my brothers wearing dogwoods and climbing to high places, I feel regretful because I am missing.
Extended information:
In the first two sentences, describe your nostalgia for your loved ones in a positive way. The language is very informal, but the intention is very careful. The first word "solitude" points out the loneliness of living alone. "In a foreign land" expresses his feeling of being far away from his relatives in his hometown. "For a stranger" indicates the strangeness of the surrounding environment. One word "individual" and two words "different" perfectly describe the lonely and desolate situation of this wanderer stranded in the world.
After rendering such an atmosphere, the young poet told us that it was in this situation that he "enjoyed the festive season", and therefore, he naturally "missed his relatives more than ever". In fact, through the lines of this poem, it is not difficult to see that the poet misses his family all the time, but it is just a festive season, and his missing is doubled.
In the next two sentences, the poet uses his imagination to depict a scene of relatives in his hometown climbing high on the Double Ninth Festival and celebrating the festival. According to ancient customs, on September 9th, people like to climb high and look into the distance, wear dogwood trees and drink chrysanthemum wine to ward off evil spirits and avoid disasters.
Here, the poet does not directly say that he misses his relatives, but uses a foil to say that the brothers miss him because "there is one less dogwood planted everywhere". This method of expressing oneself by trying to figure out others makes the feelings expressed more subtle and subtle, further aggravating the feeling of homesickness in the whole poem.
